That is the case for Williamsburg Christian guard Cle’Von Greene, who has put up huge numbers so far for his team, helping to make up for the absence of arguably the best player in school history Xavier Green who’s now at ODU.
While Greene’s production has been nice for Head Coach Chris Brown, it’s also his increased leadership that has made him a much bigger presence on the court as well.
“Last year, we had as you know Xavier Green, Andre Brown, Mike Duncan and all the rest of our good seniors who could lead our team. So I didn’t really have to be a leader,” Greene said.
“This year it’s me, the Cook twins Ra’Shawn and Da’Shawn Cook, and some seniors that are willing to step up vocally and help. So this year, I think we can do it, we have someone tall finally and we have heart, as you can see.”
After choosing to reclassify to the class of 2018 and repeat his junior year, the freakishly athletic Greene has been on a tear this season with the Eagles, leading the team in both scoring and rebounding so far this season. Two weekends ago, Greene and his teammates were on the big stage at the Reebok Crossover Showcase at the Hampton Coliseum, and he was the best player on the floor against a Hampton team that has three guard already signed to division one programs.
In WCA’s 65-59 upset over the perennial public school powerhouse, Greene finished with 31 points and 17 rebounds against what many consider to be the top backcourt in the state. After the game, Greene said he knew he had to have a big night, but nothing could have compared him for that type of outing.
Greene was named MVP of the Reebok Crossover Showcase in Hampton two weekends ago.“Before this game started, I knew I had to take over because this is my team and I’m not going to deny it,” Greene said. “I have to lead this team in scoring, rebounding or just vocally. Either way, I have to lead this team in a positive way.”
“This game has to be one of the top in my high school career. This was a pretty good team, and we actually executed and played the whole 32 minutes. That really meant a lot to my coach, myself as a captain and the whole team.”
Greene already holds three offers from UMES, Norfolk State and Longwood, and has had a slew of mid major programs calling him recently that include La Salle, JMU, ODU, Hampton and College of Charleston. According to Greene, Longwood is the school that has been most actively recruiting him and the one that he has the best bond with.
While the recognition and offers surely will come if he continues to put up numbers like that, the athletic combo guard has some work to do, but it was nice to hear that he understands what he needs to work on and plans on continuing to develop into a true lead guard.
“I think I need to improve on getting stronger, being smarter, becoming even more vocal, becoming a better point guard both scoring and passing, and just keep working hard.”
With his unreal athleticism, never ending motor and a well spoken personality, Greene will likely catch the eye of coaches who will fall in love with him if he continues to improve his all around skill set on the offensive end.
