Andres Mayberry is a 2017 point guard from Red Mountain High School in Mesa, Arizona. According to the Prep Hoops rankings, he’s the No. 48 recruit from the state, and when watching him play, the top 50 ranking makes sense.
Mayberry may not be the biggest player on the court at 5’9”, but he’s quick and athletic, and he knows how to use those traits to his advantage. As a point guard, he can run the floor and find his open teammates — especially in transition — but he’s also talented enough as an offensive player to drive the lane and attack the rim, or get his shot off from long-range. Mayberry has a smooth, effortless shot and can stop-and-pop on a dime.
Especially in an offense that likes to push the tempo, Mayberry projects to be a solid point guard at the college level. The lack of height would hinder some players, but he’s shifty as a scorer and has great vision and speed, so even against bigger and stronger players, if he can get in the open court — he can be extremely effective.
As far as high school is concerned, Red Mountain is having a pretty good season, and Mayberry feels things are coming together.
“There were definitely ups and downs during the season, but I believe it will only make us tighter as a unit,” he told Prep Hoops. “I think my teammates and coaches are putting me in great positions to be successful. That’s all I could ask for.”
Mayberry relayed that he is hearing from a few schools on the recruiting trail. Antelope Valley, Menlo and Lincoln are showing him interest. And as far as his interests are concerned, it comes down to evaluating where he’ll best be able to impact his future.
