A big part of one of the state’s most talented teams, Sutton said he spent the offseason focused on improving his ball handling and ability to score off the bounce. He has emerged this season as a more explosive athlete and scorer. Sutton was a dedicated worker in the offseason, spending numerous hours per day in the gym.
“I focused on getting in the gym and improving making the most out of every day I was in the gym I’d goto the gym and spend 3-7 hrs a day,” he said.
Hayden is on a four-game winning streak with Sutton averaging eight points and eight rebounds for a team that has a host of talented players capable of putting the ball in the basket.
“The games we played before break I’d say we didn’t play as a whole and we were still figuring everything out,” he said. “But since the new year we are currently on winning streak and we still have improving to do, but I think we are on the path of a great team.”
He says he is looking forward to a contest against Topeka High as well as a match-up against his brother.
“It’s something most people don’t get experience,” he said. “All the guys on (Topeka) I’ve played against or with most of my life from middle school till this year guys are like my brothers and it’s always good atmosphere.”
Sutton says Robbie Sanders, Eddie Lee and Tony Barksdale have all been big influences on his basketball career.
“They have been the only people who have been constantly their throughout it all,” he said. “(Sanders) and (Barksdale) have really helped me improve my game the most — just the drills and when they weren’t with me I did the drills they showed me same with Eddie Lee.
“Those guys influence me a lot.”
A fan of Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook, Sutton says he enjoys the passion the NBA’s leading scorer plays with.
“He goes out there and gives it his all no matter what and I watch him everyday on how much energy he brings and how he goes hard no matter what,” Sutton said. “I say I have put things in my game that are like his — I try to fill up every positive stat line possible and I bring the energy and I give every game my all and practice try to get the most out of everyone.”
Although he currently does not hold any offers, Sutton says he has been in contact with several JUCO’s.
