The Packers (12-5) have held their own in Class 7A-9 with a 5-1 district record. Cooney posted a team-best 12 points in Wednesday’s 45-44 loss to rival Boca Ciega. He looked really down the stretch and gave Largo a chance till the very end.
At 6’0″, 175 lbs., he’s being recruited as an athlete who can play both wide receiver or cornerback.
He says he is planning on playing football at the next level, but loves the game of basketball. However, schools love him on the field.
Here’s how he has seen the season go so far.
“We started off 8-0 then the last couple games have been kind of shaky,” Cooney said. “Every game that we lose has been under five points so I think we just need to learn how to finish games. The goal is to get back to states but right now we need to take it one game at a time.”
Cooney is aiming to improve his 3-point shooting this season.
Right now, he says he has interest from Buffalo, Toledo, Marshall and Miami (Ohio) for his football abilities.
Even though he has his mind set on football after this season, that doesn’t mean he won’t draw looks for his basketball skills. Cooney is speedy off the ball and can attack and muscle his way into some tight spots down low.
