The 6’7” Hernandez is an active and athletic big man that transferred to the Richmond suburb from Varina last summer, and he’s already making a name for himself with his gaudy numbers so far this season.
“The city is more athletic, out here it’s more fundamental, so I think I can thrive more down here with my athleticism,” Hernandez said about his transition.
Hernandez hit a big time growth spurt this summer, shooting to a legitimate 6’7”, up about five inches from what we’ve heard from multiple coaches. It isn’t hard to tell that he was a guard not too long ago, as he sees the floor like one and makes crisp passes. He’s also able to put it on the floor in transition, or run the offense from the high post in half court sets.
While many kids who go through a growth spurt are reluctant to play like a big man, that isn’t the case for Hernandez. In New Kent’s 79-50 win over Poquoson last week, Hernandez finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and five blocks, a stat line that is almost as impressive as his 14 points, 16 rebound, 11 block triple-double he had in a win over rival Charles City.
The numbers reflect the mindset that Hernandez steps on the court with every game.
“I just want to dominate, rebound and do whatever I can to help my team win,” Hernandez said.
The 2019 big man has started to make a name for himself heading into an important summer where he has to continue to improve to help get his name out there for college coaches. It’s something that he understands, but still wants to focus on finishing his sophomore season out as strong as possible while continuing to get better.
“I need to work on my outside shooting and work on my stamina,” he said. “My goal this season is just to go as far as we can. Other than that just pick up offers and help my team win.”
As he continues to grow into his body, Hernandez will become more of an all-around threat on the offensive end. Until then, his length, athleticism and high motor will make him a two-way impact player against whomever it is he’s playing.
