While Meadowbrook is known as a football school, and Battle has seen a lot of interest as an “athlete” in football, the 6’3” wing says it doesn’t have the same place in his heart as basketball.
“I think I’d be better at basketball at the next level because of my strong love for the game,” Battle said.”
After coming back from the football field, Battle has had to step into a much bigger role as a sophomore. Last year, Meadowbrook had two seniors who did much of the scoring in Richard Legree and James “Amp” Williams, while Battle filled in as a third or fourth scoring option. This season, he’s had to step in as a go-to scorer and leader, something that he was more than willing to do.
“It’s been a really big step to improve my overall play on the court,” Battle said about his transition. “Going from just being a scoring role player to the role of scoring, rebounding, distributing and leading my team as a sophomore, my coach asked me to mature and step up as a leader.”
So far this season, Battle is averaging 15.8 points and 4.8 rebounds, but has got stronger as the season has continued. In Meadowbrook’s last win over Hopewell, he led the team with a double-double of 29 points and 11 rebounds. While he’s seeing success in whatever role, Battle knows that he has to continue to get better moving forward, and it will only help his team come together if he does.
“I think I need to improve my shot selection,” Battle said. “Sometimes I need to take that extra dribble to the hoop and go up strong. As a team, I think we need to improve our team attitude. We have to stay on the same page for 32 minutes and that’s how we are going to be successful at winning games.”
While he’s still young, Battle has seen interest from a number of schools early for both sports, and has took an unofficial visit to JMU for basketball and UVA for football. An athletic wing that can score it from all three levels, his mix of talent, frame and athleticism means coaches will continue to keep him on the radar.
As for his time at Meadowbrook, he says he’s only trying to help them improve moving forward, and looks forward to the challenge of being a leader both on and off the court.
“I just want us to grow mentally as a team and only get better, take things game by game and hopefully don’t take any steps backwards.”
Expect to hear Battle’s name emerge on the recruiting board of a number of colleges for both sports, but as long as he can stay focused and improve his ball handling and shot selection, he should have a very bright future in basketball.
