The 5-foot-10 floor-general came into his freshman season not knowing exactly what role he would have with the Hawks – it’s clear now that his role is significant.
“Coming into the season, my dad is my coach, and he told me I might have to play some varsity and to get my mindset ready. So I worked in open gyms. And I worked a lot with the guys I play with now, and we formed a bond and I learned everyone’s game a little more,” said Achenbach.
“I think my game is mostly about driving and dishing, and if there’s an open lane I’ll take the shot, but I’d rather get my teammates open for good looks.”
Achenbach has been one of the state’s best assist-men so far this season — he leads all freshman in Iowa, dishing out 6.3 of them per game.
“My teammates do a good job of cutting, and I like to drive and get to the opposite block and my teammates are usually there,” said Achenbach, who also leads all freshman with 4.5 steals per game.
“We run a 1-3-1 press and they put me at the top, and my job is to take away the backward pass back to the in-bounder, and I think I do that pretty well.”
For a team that won just two games last season, having Achenbach has made a big difference. The Hawks have started this season 5-6.
“I had high expectations for myself at the beginning, and I think I‘ve kind of held my own,” said Achenbach. “People really didn’t know what to think at first, and I really didn’t know what to think. And now it’s just falling together.”
