Franklin HS had a 16 point lead going into the fourth quarter but a furious come back by North Henderson HS propelled them to a two point win 78-76.
MVP: unsigned senior Austin Nelson finished the night with 27 points and eight rebounds. He has steadily been on the top scores and WNC this season.
Offensive MVP: Austin Nelson scored 27 points on a variety of scoring plays to lead North Henderson to the win while missing the entire fourth quarter. Head Coach Justin Parris had this to say about his star point guard, “He played very mentally tough, through a lot of… adversity, he scored 28 of our 46 points through three quarters.”
Defensive MVP: Makese Lynch led North Henderson HS with 7 steals at key moments in the game and finished with 16 points and five rebounds.
Key Play of Game: Markese Lynch, hit a free throw to make it a two point game with under 4 minutes left at 73-71. He then forced a turnover that led to a North Henderson basket to tie the game with almost 2 minutes remaining.
Quote of the Night: Austin Nelson- “Team first, it allows me to succeed and allows my team to succeed.”
Numbers Game: Nelson was called for two technicals at the start of the fourth quarter and was ejected. North Henderson had a total of four technical fouls in the fourth quarter.
Best Underclassman: Kyle Decker, the junior guard scored 13 points for North Henderson and dished out 8 assists and had four steals in the win. Darren Lammons another promising young prospect had 13 points.
Best Passer: Kyle Decker. The junior guard had eight assists in the game and really took over with the absence of Nelson in the fourth quarter.
Moving Forward: North Henderson HS moves to 11-3 overall and have a big match-up with Smoky Mountain HS on Friday.
Nelson’s Recruitment: A host of schools are expected to watch Nelson on Friday as they take on Smoky Mountain. I would not be surprised to see a few scholarships come out of it.
