Prep Hoops Colorado 5A Team Rankings: Week 7
There wasn’t too much movement in the 5A rankings last week.
That could all change this week with some monster games on deck, particularly in the Centennial and Continental leagues.
Here’s a look at where teams stand heading into separation week:
1. ThunderRidge (12-1; LW: 1)
Still undefeated against Colorado teams this season, the Grizzlies opened up Continental League play Saturday with a gritty 63-58 victory over Regis Jesuit. T-Ridge is next in action Tuesday when it visits Douglas County.
2. George Washington (12-2; LW: 2)
The Patriots shook off their loss to T-Ridge the week prior by pasting Chaparral and Rangeview, who are certainly no slouches, by a combined 57 points. Calvin Fugett, the 6-2 senior guard, averaged 26.5 points during the two wins for G-Dub, which opens Denver Public League play Tuesday against the Far Northeast Warriors.
3. Chatfield (12-1; LW: 3)
The Chargers breezed last week to wins of 30 points or more over Arvada West, Westminster and Ralston Valley, moving to 4-0 in JeffCo League play and extending their league winning streak to 21 games.
4. Rock Canyon (11-2; LW: 4)
The Jaguars were idle last week, but they return to action Tuesday night by hosting Regis Jesuit in a big Continental League showdown.
5. Grandview (12-1; LW: 5)
The Wolves had a comeback for the ages while defeating Eaglecrest 70-67 on Friday. Grandview was down 20 points before a furious rally in the second half helped them move to 3-1 in the Centennial League. The Wolves hit the road for games at Overland and Cherry Creek this week.
6. Smoky Hill (10-3; LW: 7)
The Buffaloes grinded out a win over improving Overland and then cruised past Mullen with the help of dominant defensive performance by 6-7 junior Will Becker, moving Smoky into a tie for second in the Centennial League at 3-1. This team will see what its made of this week with a road game at Arapahoe on Tuesday followed by a matchup with Eaglecrest.
7. Cherry Creek (12-1; LW: 8)
One of the state’s best stories piled up two more Centennial wins last week, winning on the road at Mullen and at Arapahoe, each by double digits. Junior Rashon Johnson came through with 18 points in both wins. Games at Eaglecrest and at home against Grandview this week will give us a true barometer of where the Bruins stand.
8. Eaglecrest (9-3; LW: 6)
The Raptors have little time to lick their wounds of the heartbreaking loss to Grandview. Not with games against Cherry Creek (Wednesday) and Smoky Hill (Friday) on the horizon.
9. Denver East (9-4; LW: 9)
The Angels were idle last week and will return to action on Saturday, when they open up Denver Public League play against Thomas Jefferson at the Thunderdome.
10. Doherty (9-3; LW: 10)
The Spartans cruised to victories over Pine Creek and Palmer last week to remain in the top 10. Doherty got a career-high 14 points from junior Duke Carey in the win over PC.
