Northstar Hoops — Team of the Week Jan 9-14
With teams getting into the thick of conference play, there were a lot of excellent conference matchups between high-level teams. With so many ranked teams going head-to-head, there were opportunities abound for big wins.
Here are this week’s options for Team of the Week:
Watertown-Mayer
The Royals had quite the week, beating two primary section competitors on the road. W-M started the week with a 60-58 win over Annandale, getting a combined 50 points from Trae Berhow, McKinley Gehlhausen and Riley Alger. The Royals backed that up with a dominating win over Eden Valley-Watkins.
Rochester John Marshall
The Rockets are heating up. That was always going to happen once they got into conference play, but the Rockets are unbeaten in Big 9 play and just beat two of the next best teams in the league last week. The Rockets beat Mankato West 90-56 Tuesday before taking out Northfield and Austin Friday and Saturday.
Mahtomedi
The Zephyrs continued their early-season roll with a pair of wins last week. They started off with a dominant win over Henry Sibley, beating the Warriors by 44 points. They capped the week off with a 58-52 win over No. 8AAAA Tartan.
Maple Grove
It was a good week to have Brad Davison. Maple Grove picked up three wins last week, including two over then-ranked clubs. The Crimson opened the week with an overtime win over Totino-Grace, getting a buzzer-beater from Davison to notch the win. Maple Grove blew out Spring Lake Park Thursday before getting 41 from Davison and 22 from Tywhon Pickford in an 81-70 win over Hopkins.
Lakeville North
The Panthers added a pair of quality wins to their top-notch resume last week. Lakeville North opened the week with a 62-55 win over a solid Prior Lake team in Prior Lake. They capped off the week with a 20-point win over Lakeville South.
Northstar Hoops will put out a Team of the Week story every Monday with several teams people can vote for. People can also nominate teams for those polls by contacting me on twitter at M_Biggs_ or any of the other Northstar Hoops writers such as Ryan James, Jared Martinson or Alex Conover.
