Loranger vs. Hammond on December 13 was a rematch from a December 7 matchup that saw Hammond beat the Wolves 58-43 in the annual Tangipahoa Parish Tournament. 2017 G Evan Johnson, a North Texas commit in football, told me ALL week the Wolves were going to win the rematch and they did just that in convincing fashion, 76-61.
Johnson came off the bench to provide some defense and an emotional spark but 2018 G D.J. Hookfin was the Wolves’ top player scoring 24 points with 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals. 2017 5-foot-5 G Travis Lamb also had a big game scoring 16 points with 5 assists and four steals.
Hammond was without 2017 W/F Jeremiah Butler due to a minor ankle injury but 2018 PG Derrion Wilson still did what he does best — SCORE. He’s only 5-foot-8 but I’ve seen him about five time already this season and he’s been the best offensive player in every game. Wilson is a very good shooter and he’s a crafty player that finds ways to get his shot off in various spots on the floor. He had 27 in his latest game against St. Paul’s on Wednesday, January 11, and has scored at least 20 points nine times in 20 games this year.
Wilson was also the high scorer in a Dec. 9 game against Ponchatoula that the Tors lost, 71-65. The two teams are district rivals and they’ll meet two more times this season. The Green Wave play a fast-paced style with four solid guards and 2018 big man Damontez McGary is beginning to get more comfortable in the paint.
They have started out the district season losing their first two games against Covington and Slidell but Ponchatoula is capable of putting up big numbers. They scored 108 points in a 31-point win against Albany (video) December 30 in the St. Paul’s Tournament and connected on 16 3-pointers in the game.
2017 PG Raymond McKay had a double-double with 24 points including 6 3-pointers and also dished out 11 assists. 2017 G Josh Doussan finished with 20, 2017 G Troy Jackson had 15 and Albany 2017 G Sean Sykes was the game’s leading scorer with 35.
