Jake Hilmer (North Linn) — 20 points, 16 assists, 7 steals
Hilmer is a frequent nominee for this list, and we’re guessing he’s probably made it more than anyone in the state the past two seasons. Those 16 assists are a season high in Iowa, we won’t be surprised if Hilmer tops it before the season ends, though.
Tyler Saansgaard (Nevada) — 27 points, 9-12 3s
This youngster makes the list not only because he had a great shooting performance, but because it was his first-ever varsity experience. He attempted 12 shots in the game, all from beyond the arc, and connected on nine of them.
Arturo Montes (Grand View Christian) — 22 points on 10-13 FGs, 9 rebounds, 6 assists, 10 steals
There’s been a representative from Grand View Christian on this list seemingly every week, and this time it’s 6’5 power forward Montes. He’s a big-bodied post, who can hit a mid-range and whose dad played on the Mexican National Team. The future is bright for this sophomore.
Robby Sweers (Clayton Ridge, Guttenberg) — 33 points, 15 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals
Sweers is averaging 20 points and 8.9 rebounds per game, and he leads his team in points, rebounds, steals, blocks and assists. So ya , he’s having a great senior season — and this was his best game so far.
Alex Shriever (Rockford) — 11 points, 10 rebounds, 11 assists
Any time a guy records a triple a double, he’s likely to be on this list. We didn’t know much about the 6’1 junior before this game, but he certainly has our attention now.
Seth Weialnd (West Hancock) — 12 points (3-4 3s), 18 rebounds, 7 blocks
What a special line from a player that is getting more ink than almost anyone else this season. There’s not many guys out there that can shoot like Weiland does from deep while being a shot-blocking menace. Oh, and the 18 rebounds are nice too.
Brandyne Olin (Clarke) — 45 points on 14-17 FGs, 13 rebounds
He’s having a nice season, averaging 15.9 points per game on some fantastic shooting percentages. But he really kicked it up a notch last Saturday night in a win over Nodaway Valley. The 45 points is the the seventh highest scoring output in Iowa this season.
Jared Kruse (Oskaloosa) — 33 points (3-3 3s), 17 rebounds
We saw him play on Friday at Norwalk and came away quite impressed. Then, on Saturday, he erupted for 33 points and 17 rebounds. He’s a tall and long wing with some nice skill – look for him to make a high debut in the 2018 rankings next month.
Xavier Foster (Oskaloosa) — 11 points on 5-7 FGs, 11 blocks
Just a freshman, Foster has offers from Iowa, Creighton and Iowa State. We saw him Friday night and he showed flashes of brilliance, then on Saturday he swatted 11 shots – a season-high in Iowa. His wing-span is tremendous; Foster will block hundreds of more shots before his high school career is done.
Cam Arkema (Twin Cedars) — 38 points, 8-16 3s, 9 assists, 4 steals
There’s a handful of guys that are becoming mainstays on these lists, and Arkema is one of them. Often when we see guys score 35 or more points, they’ll have a low assists numbers – so the fact that Arkema dished out nine of them, is most impressive.
