Iowa Player of the Week (7)
Beau Cornwell (West Branch)
This sophomore standout was great last season as a freshman, making his name known around the state. He perhaps had the best week of his young career in two games last week; in two Bears wins, the 6′ guard averaged 25 points, 6 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 3 steals.
Joe Wieskamp (Muscatine)
His name is well-known by basketball fans who pay attention, and though the future Hawkeye is eagerly awaited by Iowa fans, he’s still got a year-and-a-half to slay high school opponents. The 6’6 wing could probably be on this list every week, but after his two games last week, we couldn’t leave him off. He poured in 42 against Mount Pleasant on Tuesday, and then, unbelievably, he bettered that on Friday night, torching Assumption for 47 points.
Cole Stout (Keota)
It was an unusual week this Keota sharpshooter put together, but an effective one. The 5’10 senior went all Steph Curry in two Eagles wins; all 30 of his shot attempts were from deep, and he connected on 16 of them. He scored 21 points on seven made 3s Tuesday night, and 30 points on nine made 3s on Friday. He connected on all three of his free-throws for good measure.
Zach Lester (Clear Lake)
Clear Lake strung together consecutive wins for the just the second time this season, and Lester was a big reason why. In two games the 6’2 junior averaged 30 points on 63 percent shooting, and managed to dish out 4.5 assists per game too. He was getting it done defenselessly as well, swiping 5 steals in the two wins.
Zaine Leedom (East Marshall)
This long and bouncy wing transferred from Grinnell into East Marshall, therefore he had to sit out the first half of the season. He’s back now and settling in rather nicely. In three Mustangs wins last week Leedom did what he does best: a little bit of everything. He averaged 21.7 points on 63 percent shooting, 6.3 rebounds, 4 assists, 1.7 steals and 2.7 blocks per game in the three wins.
