We spent both days at the Holidays Hoops Tournament at Huntington North, Huntington University, and Columbia City. Here are some of the Class of 2020 players who put on strong performances and showed their upside for their respective teams both days:
Will Geiger (Norwell): Will Geiger is an aggressive freshman forward who can rebound the ball well and finished well around the rim. Geiger is in the starting line-up for the Knights because he brings toughness to their group. Geiger needs a little work on his jump shot and touch around the rim but the freshman has the work ethic and tenacity to be a good basketball player as his high school career progresses. His athleticism is decent and he has good hands which allow him to gather rebounds at a high rate.
Derek Hobbs (Lake Central): Derek Hobbs currently comes off the bench for Lake Central but he is productive with his minutes. The freshman has a good feel for the game and puts himself into position to make plays on both ends of the floor. His quickness make up for him being under six foot. Hobbs will need to work on his ball handling and decision making as he sees his role continue to grow.
Mabor Majak (Hamilton Southeastern): Mabor didn’t see a ton of playing time but the 7’1” freshman is definitely a notable player in the 2020 class. Although he is long and lanky, Majak has a good feel with the ball in his hands and a soft touch on his left-handed jump shot. Mabor will need to put on a little weight as he continues to work his way into playing time for HSE. He will be a name to keep an eye on moving forward coming out of Indianapolis.
Mitchell Wilson (Columbia City): Wilson is a strong guard for Columbia City with a good handle on the ball and the ability to knock down jumpers consistently. His basketball IQ and court awareness are at a good level for a freshman. Wilson does best when he is used as a facilitator and not the primary scorer. He will need to continue working on his defensive footwork and ability to help rebound the ball on both ends by working on his strength and athleticism.
Donovynn Lewis (New Haven): Donovynn Lewis is in a tough spot with this New Haven team that is guard heavy. The freshman guard comes off the bench but has a good feel for the game. He has a consistent jump shot and is aggressive going to the basket. The 6’1” freshman has a good handle on the ball and is able to find open teammates. Lewis will need to work on his jump shot and man-to-man defense moving forward as New Haven looks to graduate a good amount of their guards this year.
