This week is incredibly kind to us in terms of schedule: Ouachita-Ruston, New Iberia-Lafayette, Bossier-Woodlawn, Wossman-Madison, Delhi-Delhi Charter and Metairie Park Country Day-Riverside are all this week.
Terrebonne’s run is over, but point proven
Terrebonne took a 20-point loss to Peabody on Dec. 15…and then didn’t lose again until last week. The Tigers ripped off nine wins in a row before falling to one of the top seven or eight teams in 5A, East Ascension, last week, but the message had been received by that point: Terrebonne is much better than its current No. 16 in the power points would suggest, having beaten Washington-Marion and Central Catholic in that streak.
Ellender’s sizable tumble
If you looked at the power points rankings right now, you would see A.J. Ellender as the No. 5 team in 4A; don’t get used to that. Ellender’s fall of late has been staggering, with consecutive losses to Jehovah-Jireh, Helen Cox, Metairie Park Country Day and Assumption taking the Patriots into this week. Those teams aren’t bad, for sure, but it’s still shocking for a team like this – still a potential quarterfinalist in 4A – go through a stretch like this.
No curiosity in Division II
Talk about haves and have-nots. The top five – University Lab, De La Salle, St. Thomas More, St. Louis and St. Michael – are so far above the rest (including Ben Frnaklin, E.D. White, Loyola Prep and Parkview Baptist) that I just don’t see much intrigue here. Some combination of those first five schools is going to be the Top 28 in this class, I’ll guarantee that.
Furthermore, I don’t see much curiosity in the eventual outcome: De La Salle is really good, don’t get me wrong, but I just don’t see anyone unseating U-High for this state championship.
Division IV = District 7-1A
Lafayette Christian, Central Catholic and Ascension Episcopal: it’s not unrealistic to think all three of them could be quarterfinalists in Division IV, that two of them could be in the Top 28 and that Lafayette Christian could win it all. Here’s the thing: they’re all in District 7-1A, and alongside a Centerville team that’s among the best in 1A. Keep an eye on that district as it plays out in mid-February, just because the quality of basketball is up there with Districts 2-3A, 8-5A, 9-5A and 2-1A as some of the best basketball you can find in the state.
