It was indeed a close matchup and a painfully slow offensive matchup as only 17 points total were scored in the first quarter and just 12 were scored in the second quarter. Westfield held a 17-12 lead at the half.
No offense came in the third quarter as Westfield held a 27-20 lead after three and eventually won the game 42-25 holding Tipton to five points total in the final quarter. Nine of Westfield’s fourth quarter points came from the free throw line.
Leading scorer: Westfield: Ian Kristensen 12. Tipton: Sam Gutierrez 12.
Leading rebounder: Westfield: Ian Kristensen 5. Tipton: Sam Gutierrez 6, Lukas Swan 6.
MVP: Ian Kristensen (Westfield)
Kristensen by far was the best player in this game. He was 4/7 from the field and stepped out and hit two big threes. He’s a 6’5 kid that can play both inside and outside well. He showed that by hitting two threes and scoring on post moves. He also had three steals and was solid on the inside on defense.
Best offensive performance: Sam Gutierrez (Tipton)
Gutierrez is a long and lanky guard that can drive around his man and score or shoot it from the outside. Really reminded me of Linton Stockton’s Josh Dieball. He scored 12 points in the game and was the only form of offense for Tipton.
Best defensive performance: Zach Banks (Westfield)
Banks played the lead guard role and was solid on offense keeping the offense moving but on defense he was great. He was long enough so that Tipton really struggled with him on their guards. He forced multiple turnovers and had a few steals, just a sophomore.
Best guy off the bench: Aaron Bennett (Westfield)
Bennett came off the bench and scored eight points. He was a little soft, but made a few from behind the arc and had a really nice assist that took momentum away from Tipton after they hit a three. Had some nice hair too.
Best takeaway: This was one of the most boring games I have been to this year. Tipton is good, they just missed easy shots all night and I counted a combined seven missed uncontested layups. Both teams combined to go 25-65. The popcorn was really good though and the band was solid at halftime.
