Benet 69 Stevenson 53
The Benet Redwings hosted Stevenson in a non-conference matchup. Both teams would struggle early on but Benet would jump out to a 13-5 lead and never look back as they defeated Stevenson 69-53. Here is a breakdown of scouting the fab five for the game.
MVP: Liam Lyman (2017) SF Benet
The Senior Liam Lyman had a major performance against Stevenson with 24 points in the victory. Lyman faced with the task of guarding Indiana commit Justin Smith the 6’4 SF was up to the challenge using his strength to battle with Smith in the post even though he gave up several inches in height. On the offensive end, Lyman really found his rhythm in the 3rd quarter knocking down back to back mid-range jumps shots to start the half. Lyman was effective scoring from all three levels of the floor. He had a lot of success working the mid-range but also knocked down three 3-pointers, and had some nice finishes around the basket as well. Lyman holds a couple D2 offers and is hearing from other low major D1, and D2 programs at the moment.
Offensive performances: Jack Nolan- (2017) Benet
Jack Nolan started the game off hot for Benet knocking down two early three pointers in the 1st and continued the sharp shooting finishing with 22 points for Benet. Nolan was effective as a catch and shoot scorer hitting some big buckets down the stretch. He also showed he can score off the dribble. Willie Herenton (2017) & Justin Smith (2017) led the scoring efforts for Stevenson with 18 & 17 respectively. Herenton had some tough buckets in the lane as well as knock down some three’s. Benet made it tough for Smith to get going but in the 3rd he had a little rhythm attacking the basket and getting put backs.
Defensive performances: Liam Lyman (2017) Benet
Lyman battled all game on defense limiting Indiana commit, and Stevenson standout Justin Smith to just 17 points. Lyman was in good positon on defense and made it difficult for Smith to get into a flow especially in the first half where Smith was limited to just three points.
Best Rebounder: Justin Smith (2017) Stevenson
Benet made the Indiana commit work for every basket he got on the offensive end. Smith however was a force on the offensive glass getting several put backs including times where he would go tip in his own miss. He also rebounded well on the defensive side helping limit second chance points for Benet.
Under the Radar performance: David Buh (2018)
Buh came off the bench and provided a spark on both ends of the floor, and was able to help spell Benet’s starting guards when they needed a breather. Made a couple timely baskets to keep the lead for Benet.
