The 6’4 forward is averaging over 20 points and 8 rebounds per game for Salem Hills High School. Here is out interview with James.
What are some strengths you have in your game that make you the player that you are?
“My biggest strength is my vision as a passer. This helps me to find teammates for open shots. I’m also a good catch and shoot shooter and also I can play with my back to the basket.”
What are some of your weaknesses that you would like to work on?
“I would like to work on my ball handling and my mid-range pull up also needs some work.”
Who is the toughest player you can recall playing against in Utah High School basketball?
“Yolie Childs from Bingham. He is a versatile big who can get up and down the court. He’s a tough player to stop.” Childs is currently the starting forward for BYU.
What team on your schedule do you want to beat the most and why?
“Spanish Fork. They are our rival and we haven’t beat them to often in my high school career.”
What team that isn’t on your schedule in Utah do you want to play the most and why?
“Logan. They beat us last year and I’d like a rematch with them.”
How do you see your team doing this year?
“If we keep getting better I think we could possibly win the region and make a run at state.”
Wha is your favorite NBA player and why?
“Damian Lillard. I used to live in Portland and I loved watching him play. He has a great attitude and I also like that he is a professional rapper.”
What is your favorite moment in your high school career?
“Against Chappareal High School from Las Vegas. I had 29 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists and we got the win.”
Who has the best home crowd in the state other than your own?
“Payson. They have a huge student section and all of the students come support.”
What is your favorite off the court activity and why?
“I enjoy reading and working out.”
What do you want to major in for college?
“I’m looking into being a lawyer so I’m interested in majoring in English. Also i’m thinking about majoring in bio-chemistry.”
What is your plan for after high school?
“I’m planning on serving an LDS mission and then trying to play college basketball.”
Prep Hoops evaluation
James Nelson, the undersized forward has shown he can do it all. He has shown his ability to score from the inside and the outside. Nelson has great court vision and is able to take over games even when he’s not scoring. If Nelson can continue to improve his guard skills I see him as a good D2 prospect.
