In addition, a couple of the mainstays have asserted that they are in fact top 10 caliber. Here is a look at the 6A Rankings.
Same Team, New Ranking
Basha High School – Basha was ranked as the #2 team in the first edition of the 6A Rankings. However, due to their solid play, they have firmly asserted that they are the king of the court at this point in the season. Basha has played a difficult schedule and received the best shot of many teams. Yet, they have still managed to find a way to stay on top. This group is as deep as they come and everyone seems be bought into the mission and vision and ready to make a deep run in the state tournament.
Part of what makes this team special is that they have 5 guys who average over 2 assists per game. Brennen Davis leads the group in this particular category as he is distributing 3 assists per game and leading the team with 4 steals per game. Terrell Brown has also been a stud for this group as he averages almost 3 assists per game while putting up a little over 15 points per game. He is currently shooting the basketball at an extremely high level as he is putting in 42% of his threes. Lastly, the big man Gabe McGlothan has been showing everyone why he is such a prized commodity. His ability to finish around the rim as well as shoot the mid-range jumper put him in an elite level of bigs in the state. He is also bringing down almost 10 rebounds per game.
Maturing at the Right Time
Pinnacle High School – It took Pinnacle a couple of tough games to find their identity and rhythm. However, they seem to be rolling along just fine at this point and are definitely a team that many will not want to face in the state tournament. The group plays solid defense and shoots the basketball at a high level. Almost every player they put on the court is capable of extending the defense and making plays. They should continue to earn their spot in the 6A Rankings down the stretch.
18 points per game, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals per game are the type of numbers that elite level seniors put up. At Pinnalce that is the standard operating procedure for freshman phenom Nico Mannion. Mannion has plenty of help on this talented roster, but he has wasted little time demonstrating that he can not only play at the varsity level as a freshman. Rather, he can be one of the highest regarded impact players in the entire state.
Adding to one of the most solid backcourts in the state is Trent Brown. Brown is a crafty player who does a great job of driving to create for others – which can be seen in his 4 assists per game, In addition to his ability to handle the basketball and play with a high basketball IQ, the sophomore can shoot the basketball at an extremely high rate. He is currently averaging just under 3 threes per game and shooting it at a 39% clip. This tandem of guards mixed with the other talented prospects will take this team deep into the state tournament.
Moving on up
Red Mountain High School – Red Mountain’s improved play earned them the title of “Team to Watch” in our last rankings. They have lived up to the hype and have made their first appearance in the 6A Rankings. They are currently on a big winning streak with one of the wins coming against Mesa. One of the biggest changes that has occurred and helped them improve their winning ways is the addition of top tier talent Timmy Allen. With him in the mix, Dre Harris, and Andres Mayberry; this team could be poised to make a lot of noise in the state tournament. Keep an eye on this much improved team.
