Dubuque Senior: It was plain to see last March at the state tournament that the Rams were the team of the future; how quickly they could reach the top of the mountain was the question. We’re midway through the following season, and it appears they are poised to make not just another state tournament berth, but quite possibly a deep run. They’ve run off six straight wins, and are now 9-1 behind 16.7 points per game from junior Carter Stevens and 16 per game from sophomore Noah Carter.
Bettendorf: These Bulldogs from the eastern edge of the state have made a statement through the first half of this season: that they are for real. After a decent 4-2 start to the season, they’ve rattled off five straight wins, including triumphs over Muscatine, Davenport Central and Assumption. And they’re doing it with one of the more well-balanced scoring attacks in the state; leading scorers JMichael Young, DJ Carton and Dylan Clearman are all averaging between 10 and 11 points per game.
Hoover: Don’t look now, but after a rough start to the season, Hoover is starting to get back into their usual form. It was not long ago that the Huskies dropped three straight games, very uncharacteristic for one of the state’s premier programs. Since then, they’ve won six straight — including wins over Des Moines North and Ames. Douglas Wilson is averaging 18.1 points and 13.9 rebounds per game; he’s an early front-runner for Iowa Mr. Basketball.
Down
Davenport West: The Falcons were able to scrape together a couple wins early in the season, albeit against a 3A school and a still winless Burlington squad. But that’s been it as far as wins go, and that 2-3 start has snowballed into a 2-9 mark here at the midway point of the season. They’ll try and get back into the win column tonight at Geneseo (IL).
Iowa Falls-Alden: After a very promising 5-1 start to the season, the Cadets have fallen of rough times of late. Losers of three straight, it will be up to Jace Ites and Weston Meyer to try and right the ship tonight when they host Webster City.
Winfield-Mt. Union: It’s now five losses and counting for a Wolves team that at one point was 5-4 and winners of four straight. The good news: tonight they are at home against one of the few remaining winless teams left in the state, Columbus Junction.
