Mamoudou Diarra was not just the most active frontcourt player in the gym Monday, he also was exceptionally impactful. Diarra’s spring and second bounce make him a nightmare for any layup aspirant. Signed to Washington, Diarra projects as a active forward. He can hit from 15 feet, or place a couple dribbles on the deck. Diarra finished with 19 points, six rebounds, four assists, two blocks, three steals and a blistering 87.5% from the floor.
Play of the Game : Mamoudou Diarra – 22 FT Academy (2017)
In the final minutes, 22 FT was attempting to gobble up the seconds. The offense was patient. And then BOOM.
Diarra pounded a dunk on a unwitting defender’s head.
“I could see them coming,” said Diarra. “They always pass me the ball like that. I am always ready at the time to catch the ball and dunk. So that is why we do that.”
Best Offensive Performance : Mamoudou Diarra – 22 FT Academy (2017)
In a battle of #2 and #3 in the state, Diarra easily won. He can do more with the basketball and moves more without it. While Claxton is intriguing and able to score from deep, Diarra created more on his own. Diarra’s nimble feet and swiveling head give him a heightened awareness of the action. He is locked in and either finds his gaps or creates his chances. Diarra scored 12 points in the opening half.
Best Defensive Performance : Kyran Rawson – 22 FT Academy (2017)
Rawson denied the post with wise court awareness. He stepped in front of passes without gambling. Rawson is not explosive vertically, but he positions himself adeptly.
Best Intangibles : Mamoudou Diarra– 22 FT Academy (2017)
Diarra floats around the floor with such quiet feet. The forward is still picking up facets of the game, but his variety of step size confounds defenders. He is also a very smooth passer and rebounder. The skills are surrounded by elite athleticism and unselfish motives.
Best Guy off the Bench : Shy’Qua Grimes – Legacy Charter (2018)
The 6-foot-10 forward Grimes ferociously attacked the rim. He is staggeringly good for a role player, but Legacy Charter brings the aggressive forward on late in the second quarter. Coming off a 7-7 performance Sunday, Grimes gave the team two points and two rebounds and some needed energy.
Best Under the Radar Performance : Daniel Sackey– 22 Ft Academy (2018)
Legacy Charter likes to push tempo, but they only recover back when their emotions are positive. Drooping heads after misses or turnovers allowed for Daniel Sackey to shove the break right into the gut of the Legacy defense. Sackey fed a lovely behind-the-back pass to Peanut Cunningham. His assertive play demoralized further the Legacy lads.
Best Underclassmen : CJ Jamison – Legacy Charter (2019)
Jamison gets a lot of blue-collar responsibilities. He facilitates, defends, and rebounds. His three turnovers were bothersome, but the sophomore scored four points and wrangled five rebounds. He starts for a very good outfit and makes a difference defensively.
Best Project to Watch : Dallaz Corbit – 22 FT Academy (2019)
A muscular forward, Dallaz Corbit will certainly pound the paint for years to come. Listed 6-foot-6, Corbit plays more like an undersized four. His maturation on the ball can only broaden his game. For now, Corbit is primarily an energy guy with rebounding responsibilities. The coaching staff is working to transform the rugged young man into a college wing. It is possible.
Best Takeaway :
The open floor suits the two high-octane offenses. Two high-major signees thrived when they had space to maneuver. Unlike most high school contests the defensese did not sag to swarm the lane. Claxton usually succeeds when he doesn’t have little guards in his pocket. Diarra bounded around everybody all afternoon. His eagerness to pass complimented a potent attack.
