Daniel Love finished with a game-high 18 points for Dr. Phillips (12-3) while Dae’Son Barnes had 10 points for Wharton (8-2).
MVP: Daniel Love (Dr. Phillips)
Daniel Love is a junior guard who can really shoot the ball well. In this one, he had 18 points which included three 3’s in the first half alone. Look for the 2018 prospect to continue to be the main threat offensively night in and night out for Dr. Phillips.
Best offensive performance: Ronaldo Williams (Wharton)
The second half was nice to Ronaldo Williams. The 6’4″ junior forward had nine points over the final 16 minutes of the game as he gave Wharton plenty of help late.
Best defensive performance: Nick Smith (Dr. Phillips)
The NC State football commit, Nick Smith is a big 6’3″ guard. He is tough down low and plays more forward than guard for the Panthers. Smith showed off his locked down defense in this one.
Best attacker: Dae’Son Barnes (Wharton)
Senior guard Dae’Son Barnes is someone who can knock down jumpers from all over the court. He chose to attack more often than not in this game and it helped the cause. Barnes had 10 points in a strong effort.
Best intangibles: Reggie Jennings (Wharton)
Out at the wing, Reggie Jennings does plenty for the Wildcats. He is part of a solid group of undersized athletes. Jennings had a team-best 11 points and was the only player for Wharton who scored in every single quarter.
Best under-the-radar performance: Jordan Poventud (Dr. Phillips)
Sophomore Jordan Poventud is listed at 6’1″, but he plays forward for the undersized Panthers. He took the opening tipoff and won. He had six points in this game and made plenty of plays.
Best catch and shoot guy: Darin Green (Wharton)
The shots weren’t falling like usual for sophomore Darin Green, but he still managed to score seven points. He made one 3-pointer in this one which is a low amount for him, but when Green gets hot there really isn’t much you can do to stop him.
Best underclassmen: Marcus Tillman (Dr. Phillips)
A football player first, it can’t be fun covering Marcus Tillman or matching up with him on the other end. Only a sophomore, Tillman is built like a linebacker. He didn’t score in this game, but his impact as a defender off the bench was evident.
Best energy: Isaiah Thomas (Wharton)
Isaiah Thomas didn’t earn much time on the floor in the final quarter, but the junior forward did enough with seven points for Wharton. He brings it another level when he’s out there.
Best athlete: Je’Quan Burton (Dr. Phillips)
A scrappy 5’9″ junior guard Je’Quan Burton hit two clutch free throws late to keep Dr. Phillips ahead in the fourth quarter. He had nine points in this game and was by far the quickest guy on the floor.
