The Buccaneers (11-6) are back on a winning streak after losing three straight games prior to this weekend. Sophomore forward Alex Weinstock led Berkeley Prep with 15 points while Shorecrest Prep (2-14) earned a 15-point outing from junior forward Mitchell St. Cin.
Here are the 10 best performers from this matchup.
MVP: Kaleb Karnes (Berkeley Prep)
He may not have had the most points for his team, but junior guard Kaleb Karnes did just about everything for the Buccaneers. Karnes had nine points, three rebounds, two steals and two assists. Karnes had to be attended to by the team after he had a cut on his face in the first half. He played with a Band-Aid on his cheek, but that didn’t stop him from going 100 percent. Karnes is really good with the ball in or out of his hands.
Best offensive performance: Alex Weinstock (Berkeley Prep)
A sneaky good player on Berkeley Prep is sophomore forward Alex Weinstock. He drew the spot start and made the most of it with a season-high 15 points. Weinstock can shoot from all over the court and he took chances near the basket which was nice to see. At 6’2″, 185 lbs., you can see his confidence growing with each possession.
Best defensive performance: Nicholas Petit-Free (Berkeley Prep)
Nicholas Petit-Free is built like an offensive lineman. That’s exactly what the 6’6″ junior is being recruited to play at the next level with offers from the likes of Alabama, Auburn and Ohio State. On the court, he uses his overall muscle to keep everything in check. He had four points, three rebounds and a steal playing shut down defense.
Best intangibles: Mayan Ahanotu (Berkeley Prep)
One of many football players on Berkeley Prep’s basketball team, junior forward Mayan Ahanotu is fun to watch. He is always smiling and hustling towards the ball. In this game, Ahanotu scored eight points, grabbed six rebounds and had one block. He posted six of the team’s first eight points in the fourth quarter.
Best under-the-radar performance: Brendan Paver (Shorecrest Prep)
Senior guard Brendan Paver was red hot in the fourth quarter, hitting three 3-pointers to give him 11 total points for the game. He was held to no points over the first half, but when Shorecrest Prep needed a big play, Paver showed up.
Best catch and shoot guy: Kegan Karnes (Berkeley Prep)
The younger Karnes brother, Kegan is a freshman, but he plays with a ton of poise. I’ve known about his range for quite some time and in this game, he was able to score 11 points. Karnes connected on three 3’s and made a two on an attacking play. If he can expand his inside moves, he’ll be really good.
Best underclassmen: Zion Carter (Berkeley Prep)
Key seniors Tim Keeley and Kaleeyl Findlay are not able to play, so sophomore forward Zion Carter is soaking up those minutes. The 6’4″, 215-pounder is filling in nicely. He had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Carter flashed his smarts when he hauled in a tough rebound that landed near the free throw line. He proceeded to knock down the jumper with ease.
Best attacker: Zach Mathis (Berkeley Prep)
Coming off the bench in this game, junior forward Zach Mathis scored nine points. There wasn’t a better attacker today than Mathis, a usual starter. He also pitched in with four rebounds, two blocks and an assist. In fact, his best play of the day came in the opening quarter on a no-look pass down low to Ahanotu.
Best energy: Omarhiyon Malcolm (Shorecrest Prep)
Only a freshman, you can tell that Omarhiyon Malcolm has serious potential. The 6’2″ forward added eight points against the Bucs. Shorecrest Prep can count on him to make plays in transition. His outside shot needs more touch, but the chance for him to be solid is there.
Best athlete: Josh Youngblood (Berkeley Prep)
A hybrid player for the Bucs football team, Josh Youngblood’s speed is undeniable. The 5’10” sophomore guard found open space plenty in this game with eight points. He scored four points in the fourth quarter with Berkeley Prep well in front. This kid is really starting to play with solid awareness and tempo.
