Schools from North Carolina and South Carolina participated with Dillion and the host school West Bladen having the chance to compete with each other for the tournament Championship. The game would remain close throughout with West Bladen pulling out the win in the final moments, even though they were the host team, West Bladen was seen by the underdog by man in the building. Even Coach Pait from West Bladen stated ‘‘ I would bet if you went into the stands tonight and asked it would have been a 19/1 out of 20 of people saying that Dillon was going to win, probably only our parents thought we had a chance.’’ Throughout the games there were a few players that stood out, here are a few of those young men that colleges should keep an eye on:
Scotland County 2018 Guard Niem Ratliffe: A Guard that can flat out score it, doesn’t have a ton of height but he plays with heart, smoothing shooting stroke from deep. Finished with 31 Points in the loss to First Flight.
First Flight 2020 Guard Dylan Blake: He’s small in size and stature but has a game that is very advanced, shoots it well from deep even when contested, finished with 17 Points in the win over Scotland County.
Whiteville HS 2017 Guard Tyrell Kirk: Didn’t have his best showing but you can see why Colleges are intrigued by him, he’s a 6’4 PG with a smooth handle and nice passing ability. Named to the All-Tournament squad.
Fairmont HS 2017 Guard Julius Caulder: He was absolutely on fire from deep! Finished with 7 treys on the night and knocked 4 treys in a row down during a run in the third quarter, scored 22 Points on the night.
Fairmont HS 2017 Guard Brent McDonald: One of the better on ball defenders in the tournament, came up with back to back steals in the 2nd half. Does a great job of staying low and not reaching but instead slides his feet, and stays honest.
Dillon HS Forward Darius Boatwright: Did a great job of contesting shots and getting rebounds, also had a few finishes above the rim on the offensive end. Has good height and a very long wingspan that he knows how to use well.
Dillon HS Guard Tyquan Porter: Has a nice blend of spend and strength, got to the paint just about whenever he wanted, also defended very well. Most impressive attribute about this young man was the consistent energy he played with throughout the game.
West Bladen HS 2017 Guard Kalvin Page: Kalvin stepped up big time for his squad, in clutch moments he wanted the ball and made winning plays. Throughout the game he didn’t commit many turnovers and played very solid defense making things difficult for the Dillon HS guards.
