To get a few things out of the way from the top, we are looking at a team’s overall resume when we are doing these rankings, not just one game. As you will see in the innagural rankings, head-to-head matchups matter, but are not the end all, be all of your rankings. Just because you beat a team that is ranked higher than you, doesn’t mean that you will be moving ahead of them. This is going to become a weekly ranking, and new rankings will be released Sunday night/Monday mornings. We will also be reguarly updating classification rankings weekly, every Wednesday, beginning this week. If you have any questions about the rankings, or want to reach out to me to tell me I’m an idiot for putting another team above your favorite, reach out on twitter @PrepHoopsLA or @chancelemaire.
Now you may be wondering why this is a top 6 list rather than a conventional top 5 list. The reason is simple. As of right now, I feel like these 6 teams are the best teams in the state, and after these teams, there is a bit of a drop off, so I am choosing to group them together, starting with:
- U-High (7-0)
You’ll be hard pressed to find another team in the state that has lost as much talent as U-High did from last season. With two players now playing major D1 basketball, I was expecting a bit of a drop of from last season, but that 7-0 record speaks for itself, including a big win over a very tough East Ascension squad.
- LCA (5-1)
Top to bottom, this team is loaded with talent. With a starting lineup that has three players with D1 offers, as well as a fourth memeber in Terrence Jones that is only a sophomore but I expect big things from going forward. The biggest question mark is whether all of that talent can come together, or will it continue to be a “your turn, my turn” situation on offense. They are our highest ranked 1 loss team, with their only loss coming to top ranked Madison Prep
- Riverside (0-0)
This is the only team in our initial rankings without any games played, but I think that Coach Timmy Byrd’s reputation while at Riverside should speak for itself. Since arriving in 2009, Riverside has played in a state title game in every single year. I expect that to be no different this year. It’s only a matter of time before Riverside starts playing, and starts winning.
- Scotlandville (4-0)
Despite losing two D1 caliber players from last season’s team, this Hornet’s team is still loaded with talent, including 3 players ranked in the top 100 of 2017, and the top player of 2018. While they haven’t played a ton of talented teams yet this year, this week is going to be a huge test, going up against Madison Prep and Landry-Walker. In a week’s time, this team could be the #1 team in the state or it could drop a bit. Only time will tell.
- Natchitoches Central (5-0)
There is little doubt that Natchitoches Central is going to be in the running for a state title by the end of the year. However, one of the biggest causualties of the the select/nonselect split is robbing fans of seeing a finale between Natchitoches Central and Scottlandville for the 4th straight year, meaning that 2017 G Brandon Rachal won’t have the opportunity to play the same team in the state title game every year he is in high school.
- Madison Prep (4-0)
“Oh my god!” “HOLY SH*T” “Thank god they aren’t in our class (for playoffs)” These are all three real texts I got about Madison Prep over the weekend from three different coaches after seeing the results of the Chargers games over the weekend. I knew they would be good, but I couldn’t have imagined this good. After playing three teams in three straight days that are all ranked in the Top 15 in the state, no one has been within 20 points of the Chargers, and at this moment, I can’t envision a team that can take down this Madison Prep team. This is perhaps the best team that Jeff Jones has had in his time at Madison Prep, and that is saying something.
