To get a few things out of the way from the top, we are looking at a team’s overall resume when we are doing these rankings, not just one game. As you will see in the innagural rankings, head-to-head matchups matter, but are not the end all, be all of your rankings. Just because you beat a team that is ranked higher than you, doesn’t mean that you will be moving ahead of them. This is going to become a weekly ranking, and new rankings will be released Sunday night/Monday mornings. We will also be reguarly updating classification rankings weekly, every Wednesday, beginning this week. If you have any questions about the rankings, or want to reach out to me to tell me I’m an idiot for putting another team above your favorite, reach out on twitter @PrepHoopsLA or @chancelemaire. Now without furthur ado, here are teams 16-25 on our initial rankings.
- Wossman (2-3)
I’m sure this isn’t the start that many were thinking the Wildcat’s would have coming off a trip to the state championship game in 3A. But don’t get too discouraged by this start. Wossman has played a very tough schedule this far, and all three losses are to legit state championship contenders. As a matter of fact, this weekend Wossman got a huge win over Peabody, giving them their first regular season loss to an in-state team since 2015, in a game I thought Peabody would be super focused for after their disappointing Top 28 loss from a half court buzzer beater.
- Landry-Walker (4-3)
“This isn’t even my final form!” The Charging Buccaneers still have another week of just floating above water, as their football team is still alive, competing in the state championship weekend. That means thus far, they have been without their three best players, including the heart and soul as well as UNO commit Lamont Berzat. While they are in the lower 20’s now, don’t be surprised if Landry-Walker ends the season in the Top 10.
- Northside (1-1)
Despite not playing very many games thus far, this week is going to be a tough test for the Vikings as they host a very competitive tournament this week, battling against Peabody and a tough Grambling team. We will know much more about this Viking team in a week, as well as when Cam Mcgilvery returns.
*On a very depressing side-note, our thoughts and prayers are with Cam McGilvery and all Northside team members. McGilvery, projected to be one of Northside’s best players this season, was the victim of a savage attack off the court, and is out indefinitely. We at PHLA wish Cam nothing but the best, as well as a speedy recovery so that he can get back to dominating on the basketball court. There are few players as exciting as he is in the entire state.*
- Country Day (2-1)
You will be hard pressed to find a better coached team in the state than Coach Mike Mcguire’s Cajuns have been the past few years, and I expect that to be the same once again this year. Despite not having much as far as size and natural talent are concerned, I am oddly confident that the Cajuns will have another successful season this year. This truly shows the mark of not only a great coach, but a great program
- St. Louis (6-0)
So far this season, St. Louis seems to be struggling on the offensive side of the ball, averaging a full 10 ppg less this season than last. Granted, growing pains were to be expected after losing a combined 42 ppg from a duo of current D1 players. However, the Saints defense has been improved, and they have done what it takes to win games, which is all that matters.
- Mckinley (5-1)
This is the best start for the Panthers going back to the 2014 team that started 7-1, and made to the quarterfinals in 5A. That has to begin and end with 2018 PG Tyrece Radford. He is a big difference maker, and this could be the beginning of big things for McKinley over the next two seasons.
- Bossier (5-3)
Following a highly emotional state championship win last season, I was expecting Bossier to take their foot off the gas, and come into this season with a bit of a championship hangover. However, that certainly isn’t the case as Bossier has some very good wins thus far, as well at all three losses coming by a combined 12 points against three very talented teams. This Bossier team is right on track to contending for a state championship once again.
- Comeaux (6-2)
After coming into this season very high on the Spartans, a 6-2 record is a bit disappointing, although not without reason. So far this season, the Spartans have been missing their defensive anchor in 6’10 big man Jordan Foster, and it can certainly be seen the last few games. For a team looking to slow the game down and give up at max 45 points per game, the Spartans gave up 76 points against a run and gun Carencro team this past weekend, and there is no way Coach Jeremy Whittington is happy about that. However, once Foster comes back, expect the Spartans to rise, and finish the season in the top 12 at least.
- Bonnabel (5-1)
So far this season, Bonnabel has only played games in tournaments, meaning that every single game has come with something on the line. That should lead to players getting used to playing in big moments early in the season, and have a significant impact come playoff time.
- St. Paul’s (6-3)
This year’s St. Paul’s team already has three times the amount of losses last years team had all regular-season, and there has been a commonality between all the teams; a long, athletic big man over 6’7 holding down the paint, in David Williams, Ryghe Lyons, and Mitchell Robinson for De La Salle, John Curtis, and Chalmette respectively. If there is anything I’d be surprised St. Paul’s would struggle with, it’d be size, as the Wolves are one of the biggest teams in the state.
