Top 10 Rankings (2A)
Each year during the high school season we will rank the teams in Divisions 5A down to 1A, with a quick explanation of each.
With the season underway with a few teams already having played a few games here are our first set of 2A rankings:
1.Emery (3-0)
After being one win away from making the 2A title game, the Spartans return the core of their team, including stud big man Koby Butler and PG Bowdie Jacobsen. The Spartans are experienced and will be battle tested by the time the playoffs role around. The Spartans just gave Waterford a beat-down and beat a good South Sevier team.
2. Layton Christian Academy (2-1)
The Eagles look to try to make it to back to back title games this year and will be lead by Christians Gutierrez and Nicholas Aguiree. They usually put together a great team that always competes against teams from all classifications. In the 1st game of the year the Eagles got hammered by Dixie, but we won’t hold that against them. They beat a decent Northridge team and a bad team in West.
3. San Juan (1-0)
It will be hard to tell how good San Juan is becaue they don’t play anyone till late December. They are led by Jordan Blake who is just a tough athlete. He averaged 18 ppg. last season, so don’t surprised if he is pushing 20 a game this season.
4. Summit Academy (1-0)
The returning State Champions have a big bullsey on their back as every team in every classification will give them everything that they can handle. They play the toughest 2A schedule in the state. They will be lead by Sr. PG Gavin Rindlisbacher and Dylan Marston. Don’t expect them to fall to far in the ranking because of their tough pre-season schedule. The Bears have some JUCO and DII and DIII talent as well. The Bears are coming of great win against an athletic team from California.
5. Enterprise (2-2)
The Wolves play a challenging pre-season schedule. It will be hard to gauge where they will stand but they could pick up some good quality wins. Jo Shurtleff will be the anchor of the team this year.
6. Manti (2-2)
The Templars have already beaten two tough opponents in South Sevier and Juab. Manti plays in a tough region and they will have to be ready to bring it every night. The Templars will be led by Mac Stevens Manti has been a school that has had players that could play at the JUCO level in the past, we will see if they have anyone this year. The Templars are on a 2 game skid and they lost to Enterprise.
7. Waterford (3-1)
The Ravens have a talented group of players coming back with a lot of experience in Jackson Sponaugle, Xander Priskos and Parker Law this trio of seniors is poised to make it further in the playoffs. The have some JUCO and DIII talent on the team. We will see how the Ravens react after loosing to Emery.
8. Beaver (2-1)
Soft pre-season schedule might hurt them against te other tough 3 teams in their region. Beaver returns a solid group of players and they have some height this year as well. Lost to 1A Merit Academy last week.
9. South Sevier (1-3)
The Rams might be back as Coach Parsons returns to coaching. They play a challenging pre-season schedule that will help them in the long run. The Rams have Buddy Gardnier and Caleb Barton to help lead them this year.
10. South Summit (2-2)
The Wildcats are lead by Jr. Kaden Atkinson who does everything on the court. He will be joined Nick Beasley and the Wildcats will be ready for a nice playoff run regardless of their final record. Beat 3A North Sanpete.
