MAIN COURT
7:00 pm. Maple Grove vs DeLaSalle
The Storyline: Wisconsin signed Brad Davison gets a chance to compete against the DeLaSalle Islander defense in match-up of teams we haven’t seen much before.
Match-Up: Brad Davison vs the DeLaSalle D. Tough to predict what Coach Thorson’s plan match-up wise is but any direction he goes the Islanders are going to defend Brad with everything they got. Will it be several different guards going at him, will Goanar Mar see him as well? Fun to watch.
Notes. The Crimson play their first game of the season tonight against 2-0 Rogers who is playing well early in the year…The Islanders defeated Des Moines Hoover on Saturday getting a brilliant performance from Goanar Mar on both ends. He had 27 in that game and then 40 last night in a ten point win over Armstrong. Mar, who has signed with George Mason, had 40 and 13 last night pushing the Islanders to 3-0…Brad Davison was teammates with Islander shooter Gabe Kalscheur this summer on Howard Pulley while Goanar Mar has been teammates with Maple Grove wings Jack Hutchison and Tywhon Pickford during years of playing with D1 Minnesota….
8:30pm. Apple Valley vs Champlin Park
The Storyline: Tre Jones vs McKinley Wright is the point guard battle that many want to see. Also two of the top teams in the state at the Class AAAA level.
Match-Up: Tre Jones vs McKinley Wright. They played this summer at the Breakdown state event but McKinley was without most of his support. Both teams will be fully stocked talent wise so Tre and McKinley can go at it in the main event.
Notes: The Rebels scored 113 points last weekend with six guys in double figures and will have had a week’s rest as they prepare for Apple Valley. JM could not defend all the CP weapons as McKinley Wright scored 27, Theo John had 19, Brian Smith had 22, DJ Hunter 14, Josiah Strong 13, and Marcus Hill 11. That is a lot to defend for anybody plus they have more size and workers in the line-up than just those six…Apple Valley beat Minneapolis North 84-70 led by a triple-double from Tre Jones and then beat Minnetonka by nine last night on the road. Tre is the main scoring weapon (and rebounder, defender, and creator) but he’s got three wings in Luke Martens, Mohamed Kone, and Nathan Macho that can be depended on. Also, Spencer Rolland is doing a fine job up front. He had 8 boards against the Rebels, scored a dozen points last night versus Tonka…
EAST COURT
6:30 pm. Mankato East vs Delano
The Storyline: A Class AAA match-up of a top five team (Delano) against a Mankato East team working to get into the top ten.
Match-Up: Keegan O’Neil vs Uhana Ochan. Delano is deep with guards, East is deep up front. We look at the big man match-up of the skilled O’Neil versus the physical gifts of Ochan. Both are growing and getting better, different style players.
Notes: East was hammered by Waseca (89-59) in the season opener but bounced back to defeat Red Wing by three scores last Saturday. East hosts Winona tonight followed by the game with Delano. Uhana Ochan scored 27 points in the Red Wing win playing with great energy while fellow junior Damani Hayes had 19 (12-14 foul shooting). Senior guard Alex Turner has been a solid scoring option in the backcourt…Calvin Wishart is one of Minnesota’s best junior guards and so far he’s put up 24.3 points per game in leading Delano to a 3-0 start. Derek Techam continues to hit shots from the arc, Keegan O’Neil is scoring ten a game, and forward Mitchell Kurtz has given the team big minutes scoring 44 points in three games…
8:00pm. Lakeville South vs Eden Prairie
The Storyline: South and EP are AAAA teams with the potential to get into the top ten in state but aren’t quite there yet. South has to prove they can win against top teams, EP just has some bodies in their line-up, some of them young.
Match-Up: Owen Chose vs Jack Sorenson. I would guess that Cade Carlson will see Chose defensively but when it comes to playmaking Sorenson will be playing the point and scoring while Chose and his flame thrower can play off the ball as EP has several that can handle.
Notes: Ugly start for the Cougars who lost by 15 to New Prague and 30 last night to Wayzata. With Eden Prairie and Hopkins being the next two games they have to figure things out in a hurry. Shae Mitchell is scoring 17 a game, Jack Sorenson 13.5, and Cade Carlson 10.5 so far. The team is not playing well out of the game and needs to figure things out quickly…EP is 2-0 and while Owen Chose has been solid with 34 points in the first two games, it’s been Kyler Kluge who is really point producing with 52 in two contests. The Eagles beat Burnsville 68-53 and Eastview 70-58. Will Pahl and Drake Dobbs have also played well so far…
