Timely shooting by THS though helped them stay afloat and never trail by more than five points. THS started to warm up late in the game and make a run. DeAvion Washington made two free throws with .2 seconds on the clock to win the game 69-68 as the 3/4 court shot made by Avon did not count.
Leading scorers: Avon: Gavin Collier 16, Evan Lowden 16. Terre Haute South: Jesse Brown 23, DeAvion Washington 15.
Leading rebounders: Avon: Evan Lowden 9, Zyan Davis 8, Zachary Rinehart 8. Terre Haute South: DeAvion Washington 9.
MVP: Gavin Collier (Avon)
Collier was really the only guy that got into a rhythm in this one. He made some nice drives to the basket and showed a really nice shot from behind the arc. He had 16 points and he was the only one that could really hit anything.
Best offensive performance: DeAvion Washington (Terre Haute South)
Washington could not really get it going but he was really aggressive. He needed to drive a touch more but still was decent. Hit a couple deep shots but never really got to the basket like he could have.
Best defensive performance: Evan Lowden (Avon)
Lowden was all over Minnett holding him to a low scoring day. He had to hold him under 20 if they wanted to have a chance and he did just that. Lowden also added two steals and was excellent on the boards.
Play of the Game: DeAvion Washington makes the game winning free-throw
Washington was fouled with .2 seconds left and missed the first end of the double bonus. He made the second to give his team a one point lead.
Best under-the-radar performance: Kenyon Sholty (Terre Haute South)
Sholty sat out last year, his freshman year, due to injury and he impressed in this one. He was active on the boards and hit a few really nice jumpers. He looks as if he could grow a big more but is undersized in the post right now.
Best passer: Andrew Short (Avon)
Short was great as the point guard. He continually hit the open man and had six assists which was very impressive given how long THS is on defense. Short looked great driving the ball and kicking out to shooters.
Best Shooter: Gavin Collier (Avon)
Collier was solid spotting up and shooting the ball. He made four three-pointers and looked like he was feeling it. Wasn’t forcing shots either and also created on his own.
Best underclassman: Zachary Rinehart (Avon)
Rinehart is a key player for Avon and was close to a double-double. He was the best rebounder on the floor and also scored a couple key baskets. He was super aggressive and that is a great thing to see out of him.
Best future college player: Jaylen Minnett (Terre Haute South)
Minnett is committed to IUPUI and he is going to be a solid guard for them. He can score, although he did not do much in this one. He has unlimited range and can fill it up in a hurry.
Best takeaway: Terre Haute South is a solid team they just played not very well this morning. That could be due to Avon being solid as well. Both teams have scorers but Avon is the more all-around team that can hang with the teams that have big scorers.
