Continue ReadingThe Maple Grove vs DeLaSalle 2016 game will go down as another memorable classic from the many years of Breakdown Tip Off Classic classics. With 25 seconds to go in the game and the score tied at 64 the Crimson came out of a timeout and put the ball in the hands of their leader. Brad Davison moved to the right side of the floor, watched the clock, dribble separated against the long arms of Goanar Mar, and nailed an NBA three over the length of well positioned Mar. The shot was made, the game was won 67-64, and the video can be found all over the place on Twitter right now.
This is a game where Davison scored 28, but didn’t score his first basket until ten minutes were off the clock in the first half. Tywhon Pickford opened the game with four three pointers early on his way to 23 points and an even high of 15 rebounds. This win was a complete team effort as the Crimson don’t win without the hard work on both ends of Ryan Bredensteiner and Bubba Horton plus the nine points and work of Jack Hutchison. Davison made 8 of 18 attempts from the floor and 10 of 11 free throw shots.
For the Islanders junior Gabe Kalscheur scored 29 points and his quality night started with four baskets moving off the ball into position to make scoring plays. Gabe moved away from the basket for the rest of the night earning his 29 points on 10 of 18 shooting (8-11 free throws). Goanar Mar dealt with constant foul trouble but scored ten points with six boards. Dominic Bledsoe scored eight and was quality on the defensive end while CJ Dickson was the team high rebounder again with eight.
MVP: Brad Davison. Brad knocked out the game winner, scored 28 and in addition to the game winner he also made the Islanders pay every time they fouled him. Brad made 10 of 11 foul shots and his ability to hurt them there was crucial to the game staying close.
Best Offensive Performance: Kalscheur. Love how Gabe started this game by getting to the front of the rim and finding ways to score with the ball and without it. Gabe then moved away from the basket and hit shots on his way to a game high 28.
Best Defensive Performance: Bredensteiner/Horton. If Maple Grove is to make the run they want to they need guys up front to battle size, rebound, and be physical protecting the paint. These two were able to do that plus they both scored twice which was a bonus.
Best Guy Off the Bench:.Sage Booker. I think, THINK, that Sage came off the bench. Gabe was definitely the best player that came off the bench in this contest scoring three times and defending hard.
Best Under the Radar Performance: CJ Dickson. The Islanders need Dickson to rebound and in the games I’ve watched this year he has been there best rebounder despite being a wing. Both Islander games I’ve seen this year he had eight boards plus scored eight points.
Best Underclassmen: Tyrell Terry. Not a great showing for the young lead guard by Terry did help Gabe get the shots needed early when Goanar Mar was sitting in foul trouble.
Best Story to watch Moving Forward: Tywhon Pickford. He had an ACL injury at the end of his freshman year and then again a month into his junior year. Tough luck and the wonder is what type of player he would be this year. Tywhon opened this game with four treys and then slashed to get his 21 points. If he can be the player that led the Crimson in scoring last year before his injury the Crimson will be right in that conversation with Hopkins and Champlin Park.
Best Aspect of the Environment: Mr. Basketball Moment. When people look back on the season and think who should win the big award, they think of big moments. So far Brad has the biggest moment of the season knocking out that clutch game winning three-pointer.
Best Prospect: Brad Davison. Many schools have wondered about Tywhon after this game, Goanar Mar is a top 200 ranked talent, Gabe Kalscheur has a Minnesota offer, but Davison is the guy listed in top 100s.
Other: Did I forget anyone? I would say Jack Hutchison’s four scores were important for Maple Grove, Goanar Mar scored ten second half points after sitting most of the first in foul trouble, and Dominic Bledsoe had some key moments.
