The first pair of boys games at the Girls Tip Off Classic saw a rapid pace push but when DeLaSalle took the floor possessions were extended and calculated. George Mason bound Goanar Mar was the catalyst attacking a Hoover front line that didn’t have the man power to keep Mar from drawing contact. Mar made all nine first half foul shots and a couple treys plus the Islanders allowed only two Hoover players to score in the first half.
Tyrell Terry controlled the second half pace and did a nice job of getting the Islanders fast break baskets or slowing down and grinding the Hoover defense. Tyrell made all four of his field goal attempts and helped Gabe Kalscheur get going with 11 second half points (he finished with 15). CJ Dickson was strong on the glass grabbing a team high eight boards, Mar totaled 27 points for the game, and all of the Islanders defended.
Hoover got 20 points from Devonte Thedford and a double-double of 22 points and 12 boards from Douglas Wilson but the only other player on the team to score was Aldeias Campbell. The rest of the team shot 0 for 15 from the floor so the Islanders took away most of the options.
MVP: Goanar Mar
Goanar was clearly the best player on the floor on both ends on Saturday (so we could of added him for the following category but decided to spread the coverage out). Scored his 27 points in several ways including forcing his way to the foul line where he took double figure attempts with just one miss (10 of 11). Goanar scored his 27 points shooting 7 of 10 from the floor.
Best Offensive Performance: Douglas Wilson
The jumping jack frontcourt talent bounced his way to 22 points and 12 boards. Most of his scoring production was off the ball collecting points from offensive boards and cuts but he finished at a high percentage as nobody could recover to defend him after teammate Devonte Thedford hit the second level. Wilson is a senior who is about 6-foot-6 and plays like a four man on offense but could guard threes so he’s kind of a combo guy without the offensive skill.
Best Defensive Performance: Goanar Mar
Goanar did a great job defending Thedford when he was moved over to defending him in the second half. Thedford had 17 points in the first half, three in the second half and Goanar was a big part of that.
Best Guy Off the Bench: Dominic Bledsoe
The senior came off the bench and brought energy to the court. There was no defensive difference when he stepped on the floor and replaced somebody. Scored twice as well.
Best Coaching Decision: The Match-Ups
There is a reason that Thedford scored just one time in the second half after a big first 18 minutes and that was the defensive changes that Dave Thorson made (he likely had some words of motivation too). Goanar Mar was on Thedford a lot more in the second half and his length and lateral agility was a game changer.
Best Under the Radar Performance: CJ Dickson
Dickson found a way to produce in a few different ways but one of the biggest was on the glass. He collected a team high eight boards.
Best Underclassmen: Tyrell Terry
There was a second half point of play when Tyrell was in total control of the basketball game. Scored all four times he shot the ball and helped a few of his teammates get their games going.
Best Story to watch moving forward: Gabe Kalscheur
Gabe had a tough shooting day being chased by a Hoover athlete. He got going in the second half to boost his total to 15 points but his percentages were low as he didn’t attempt many jumpers in space with feet set. Most of his attempts were on the move. I would expect to see him get more attempts with feet set as that is where he’s at his best.
Best Stat: Hoover Support
The top three Hoover players scored all of their points. Guys four through eight came away with zero. They shot a combined 0 of 15 from the floor.
