F Kawanise Wilkins (Farragut – 2017)
The senior guard for the Admirals does just about a little bit of everything for his team. Kawanise is a wide body wing who plays inside and outside. He’s basketball tough and makes the right decisions for his team. Wilkins shoots the ball well connecting on a couple of threes. Made two of them in crunch time with his team down seven. He wasn’t limited to the perimeter either. He was able to use his body to make plays inside. Not considered an athlete Kawanise has a nose for the ball and found his way around the ball to grab 10 boards. Wilkins finished with 22 points to lead all scorers. He has a high IQ for the game and his leadership was beneficial in the Admirals win over H-F. I am certain we hear more about him in the tough Red West conference. Wilkins is a unsigned senior.
F Jeffrey Boyd (Homewood-Floosmoor – 2017)
Boyd had a stretch in the game where he looked like the best scorer on the court. The wing looked good attacking the rim beating slower defenders with ease finishing with strong layups and mixing in some slick floaters earlier in the game. Jeffrey got away from attacking later in the game as he settled for more jump shots than before. He only made a few shots and his play felt forced in the process. Boyd finished with only 13 points, but he also snatched 8 boards as well. H-F would lose by two in what was a close game majority of the game.
G Reggie Strong (Farragut – 2020)
Reggie is another eye popping freshman guard that has surfaced early in the season. He’s not a typical small thing freshman we normally see. Strong has a solid frame, he’s very poised, and plays at good pace. With his size he has good vision and makes sound plays for a young guard. Defensively he has long arms and plays good on ball D. He gets deflections and plays the passing lane well when he is off the ball handler. Reggie didn’t score in the win over H-F but he contributed many ways. He had 7 assists and 5 rebounds. He’s must work on his jumps shot more but he’s a freshman that starts on varsity and that will come in time.
G Rashaad Williams (St. Rita – 2017) G Jordan Matthews (St. Rita – 2018)
The two guards did a great job of adding pressure to the inexperienced back court of U High guards, causing turnovers that led to easy baskets in transition for the Mustangs. Williams did a great job at being poised in half court sets as the senior made several corner jump shots for St.Rita. Mathews was able to get to the bucket and score over the Maroon’s Jameel Alausa who’s a shot blocker. Rashaad and Jordan give a different one two punch for St. Rita. Both can add great ball pressure while the other sit back and anticipates the pass. It’s still early in the season but these two have been playing like they have been together for years.
F Jared Scott (Oak Park-River Forest – 2017)
In Sundays match-up with Crete- Monee Jared got it going early and never really looked back. Scott opened the game with a three pointer and then followed it up with a runner off the back board. He’s a tough wing to guard. Jared can make shots on the perimeter and he can also be a physical post guy in the paint. Scott isn’t the fastest and he doesn’t jump really high but what he does as a high school player that most coaches love is “he plays within himself.” Jared takes little to any shots outside of his comfort level. On Sunday he did just that scoring 18 points and grabbing 8 rebounds in the win over Crete-Monee. Scott is another unsigned senior who played well at the Team Rose event.
PF Cameron Gross (Oak Park-River Forest – 2017)
Just like his teammate Gross adds much senior stability to a lineup that consist of two sophomores and a junior. Cam was a model of consistency on the court knocking down 3 three pointers and also getting to the free throw line on a consistent basis. Gross isn’t afraid to use his body when the ball is in the air. He finds bodies and hit them for rebounds. In what was a pretty close game until the end Gross earned a 16 point night with 7 rebounds in the win over Crete-Monee.
PF Raekwon Drake (Orr – 2018)
Drake played like a man possessed on the defensive side. He’s a high major athlete with really good instincts that stays around the basketball. Raekwon did a great job on Marian Catholic’s big man changing shots making it difficult to score every time. In one possession Drake blocked three shots before Orr got the ball and scored on their end. Raekwon turned his energy on the defensive side into points. Connected on a 15 footer and got several put backs around the rim. Drake is the floor leader for this Spartans team. A three year starter who’s primed for a break out year this season.
