A game of two contrasting turned into a one-sided matchup with the Bombers style of play winning out as St. X took the victory 70-63. While the score might indicate a close game the final outcome was never really in doubt with X silencing every Hughes run with timely half court execution and big shots from c/o 17 guard Daniel Keyes who lead the Bombers with 21 points, which is also his season’s average. The supporting cast also played a key role in the Bombers victory including c/o G Matthew Budde who had 13 points his self while going 3 of 5 from three point range.
As for Hughes Big Red it was a struggle the whole evening to get buckets, even of the easy variety. Big Red for the game shot 39.3% from the field and 28.6% from 3-point range while the Bombers over 53% from the field and over 50% from the three. It was even a rough night for potential conference and city player of the year candidate, Stony Brook commit Corry Long who finished with a game high of 33 points but did it while shooting 11 for 28 from the field. Combine that with a size advantage for the Bombers which allowed them to bother shots at the rim and you have a Hughes team that struggled to get into any kind of rhythm offensively.
St. Xavier (2-1)
Daniel Keyes (6-6, Sr., G) – Showed great understanding of moving without the ball the entire night, including shoot preparation when off the ball and coming off screens. Quieted a couple of runs by Hughes with big shots to help the Bombers keep momentum. Also showed an ability to handle the ball and initiate the offense as well as score off the one and two dribble pull-up jumpers. Went 8 of 16 from the field for his 21 points, including 3 from three point range. Could be a potential Division II-III player.
Matthew Budde (6-4, Sr., G) – Also showed good shot preparation when off the ball as well. Helped to initiate a lot of the offense for X as well. Did struggle some against the smaller, quicker defenders. Showed good craftiness when driving to the rim. Went 3 of 5 from three point range and 4 of 6 from the line for his 13 points.
St. X Front Line – The combination of Luke Pellot (6-7 Sophomore Forward), Gage Hammann (6-7 Senior Forward) and Bobby Jefferson (6-3 Junior Forward) deserve kudos for doing the dirty work in the Bombers victory. While there combined stats may not pop out at you, 23 points and 10 rebounds combined, the screen that they set for the Bombers shooters while also altering shots at the rim was huge in the Bombers victory. The Bombers big men also did a solid job of the finishing the scoring opportunities that they were presented with going a combined 11 of 18 from the field. Pellot in particular could be an intriguing prospect for the class of 19.
Hughes (2-3)
Corry Long (6-3, Sr., G) – The Stony Brook commit and #14 ranked player in the Prep Hoop class of 2017 rankings struggled to say the least. His 33 points came on 11 for 28 shooting and struggled hitting shots from all areas of the court. The size and length of the second defender seemed to be the major issue for Long as he had no problem blowing past the first defender. Scored a lot of his points when the game was already decided.
AJ Smith (6-4, Jr., W/F) – The #61 prospect in the Prep Hoops class of 2018 rankings, Smith struggled as the under-sized center in the Hughes attack. Did battle his way to a 13 point, 5 rebound evening. Showed good activity throughout the evening, getting his hands on loose balls the entire evening. Was able to beat the St. X big men to the rim on a few occasions for lay-ups and to draw fouls. Really battled hard throughout the evening against guys who had him by 2-3 inches and over 20 pounds.
