It’s showtime! First thing comes to mind as the senior, P’hariz Watkins from Chaminade-Julienne Catholic High School takes the court. He is instantly the crowds favorite as he keeps them in tuned with the game. P’hariz makes sure they get their monies worth and makes sure his team stays in the game. The senior does not hesitate to get his team a basket. He can score from the perimeter and the paint. Not only is Watkins a scorer, but he makes great passes. He made a game winning decision to attack the lane and dish the ball off with seconds left on the clock against Cincinnati Archbishop McNicholas. The 6’2 guard is averaging 17.6 points, 3 assist and 4.8 rebounds a game. He is off to a solid start with his buddy Christian Montague who is also a senior guard. The two go by Orange Juice which is a reference from 2K17 from their chemistry off and on the court.
I asked P’hariz how his style of play helps his team. He said “I think my style is productive for our team and it blends well with our other guards. We pressure the ball full court and it helps me read and sort of play safety at center court and anticipate steals to start our fast breaks.” That is exactly how I saw P’hariz just a few games ago. He explained their goals for the season. “Our goals for the season is to win games, win trophies, and eventually hang a banner in our gym. For me personally, to keep playing solid basketball and improve my teammates so we can all get looks and receive offers.” That displays the leadership ability that P’hariz is capable of having for his team.
When you look at Watkins, you may notice how tall and slim he is for a point guard. I am sure coaches would love to see him pick up some weight but his game is anything but small. He attacks the rim and finishes with no problem. Watkins has three main components in his game that made him stand out: 1. His ability to see the open teammate when he attacks the rim. 2. His ability to consistently knock down the midrange jump shot. 3. Playing the passing lanes.
Watkins is receiving interest from some really good Division III programs such as Marietta College, Heidelberg University, University of Northwestern Ohio, Wheeling Jesuit University, Defiance University, and two Division II programs such as The University of Tampa, and Lander University. Watkins is showing he can perform at either level of basketball.
