Now that the tournament is over and everything is played, let’s recap the tournament and what we learned. I’m breaking this down by the top finishers, some thoughts on how teams showed and complete team-by-team results at the bottom.
Champions: Madison Prep, winning all four games by at least 21 points. It’s safe to say the Chargers are as good as it gets in 2A this year.
Runners-up: Lafayette Christian. The ending was ugly (71-44 loss to Madison Prep in the championship game), but the road to that point was quite impressive: 54-53 over Carroll, 56-41 over Fair Park and 47-37 over Landry-Walker. Something tells me Lafayette Christian will be very appreciative of the power points earned here come February.
Third/fourth place game: Washington-Marion 64, Landry-Walker 50; Fifth/sixth place game: Ouachita 54, Fair Park 44.
Consolation bracket final: Peabody 78, Lincoln Prep 45.
- How about that Wossman/Peabody game in the first round? 81-80 win for Wossman after Peabody’s buzzer-beater didn’t fall. This game shows me two things: one, Wossman beating Peabody in last year’s 3A semifinals may have happened on a fluke shot, but the Wildcats being right there with the War Horses was no fluke and this year’s Wildcats have as good a chance as anyone to get there again. The second thing is basically the same thing for Peabody: in the consolation bracket, the War Horses thrashed St. Martinville and beat LaGrange to get to a piping hot Lincoln Prep team, fresh off wins over Carver and Carroll after scaring the life out of Landry-Walker.
- Now that I’ve briefly mentioned them, let’s dive into this Lincoln Prep team for a minute. Freshman guard Chance Robinson has been doing it big from what I hear on Twitter, plus the returning threat of Tylan Dean. That backcourt makes this Panther team dangerous for the 1A playoffs when those come around. Hearing the reports out of there make me want to see this time in person. Stay tuned…
- No 3A district in the state is good as District 2 and we got a preview of one of those games in this tournament: Carroll 52, Richwood It was an impressive showing for both teams overall, despite more wins than losses: Carroll lost by one to Lafayette Christian and Richwood lost by three to Fair Park, for example. These Monroe area teams seem to be constantly playing tournaments with stacked fields – Rayville, West Monroe and Ouachita tournaments loom large on the schedule – so these showings with a few weeks to improve before those tournaments makes me think more great games are coming.
