The Favorites
Mason Archambault of RC Stevens. What’s the first thing you need to win Mr. Basketball? Wins. Good wins. Stevens has only played once but that one game was against Washington and Mason got his team a win 59-46. Mason had his first “Mr Basketball level performance” hitting five treys and scoring 25 in the win.
Tayton Vincent of Sioux Valley. Right now Vincent is the leader of the number on team in state and all the wins have been quite convincing. Vincent has already put together a triple-double and was closeto that mark two other times but the minutes were limited because of the difference in score. Tonight the Coassacks play Madison in their biggest test of the season to date and the way Vincent is playing they are a big favorite.
Top Contenders
Matt Cartwright of SF O’Gorman. Cartwright has his team at 3-0 and they are the clear number one in state entering the Mitchell Classic after the holiday break where Matt will be on the big stage with some of the best high school players in the country. Matt opened the year making 7-12 shots for 20 against Brandon Valley, had 13 vs Watertown, and then had 14 to beat rival Lincoln.
Ethan Freidel of Tea Area. The Titan shooter and leader has done his job so far getting a great win over Dakota Valley to start the year and then beating the next opponents handily. Ethan made all of his free throws four treys to score 24 in that win over Dakota Valley followed by 24 against an Iowa team, and then 25 in a recent blowout. Shooting the lights out so far.
Potential Contenders
Jack Talley of SF Washington. Jack is coming off a double-double in a win over Yankton. Yes the young superstar from Yankton middle school is what everyone was talking about but Talley had his 16 and 10 and his balanced team won the game and is now 3-1. Talley neared a double-double in the Roosevelt blowout and had 11/9 in the win against St. Thomas More.
Tayten Maher or Jake Satter or Isaac Koretemeyer of St. Thomas More. Cavs are 2-1 and just as close to a run at state as they were when they were preseason #1. Who will be a candidate? This team has balance so maybe nobody as the team play may cancel it out. Maher has been outstanding with some huge shooting games already, Issac has had a couple double-doubles, Satter’s last game saw him explode for 26.
Cooper Williams of Vermillion. The goal of this team is the state tournament and so far things look good with a 5-0 start to the season. Williams is simply doing what his team needs for wins. They needed his shooting in the Lennox win when he scored 19, his distribution blowing out Irene-Wakonda, and then some of both when Cooper had 13 points and 7 assists in the Tri-Valley win.
Dejay Fyskstra of SF Christian. The Chargers haven’t been challenged as of yet crushing Lennox and West Central but games with Washington and O’Gorman are on the corner and those are games that can make a player a Mr. Basketball contender. Fykstra had a dozen in the recent win over West Central.
Tyler Rozell of Warner. So far so good for the defending champs beating Webster and Potter County handily. Rozell is the headliner of the group and will be center stage all season.
What About?
Bennett White of Wolsey-Wessington. The guy who we previously didn’t identify who has likely made the biggest statement so far is Bennett who is having nearly 25 point per game so far guiding his teams to wins each night along with Darion Ogunjamalousi.
Watch Out For….
Robert Rosenquist and John Prochello. Dakota Valley has the talent to make a similar run of wins as last year and these two will be front and center. Both are scoring 18 a game so far with John also grabbing six boards a night.
