Continue ReadingThis year Burke Putnam entered with several goals in mind at East Central. One of those was to get a college scholarship at the Division I level. An offer from a Division I school has not came yet, but if he continues this level of play throughout the entire season one is likely to head his way.
Last night Putnam was special scoring 33 points, pulling down 10 rebounds and dishing out 6 assists in a close loss to conference foe Tulsa Central. The intangibles Putnam has on the court along with his character off the court make him a special player.
Putnam has a unique skill set at the Point with the ability to drive to the basket and finish over defenders, get the ball to an open teammate off the drive, or the area he has most improved over the past year is his outside jump shot. The improvement in Putnam’s jumper has made him even tougher to guard.
Putnam is starting to gather attention across the region from many of the JUCO and Division II programs. Last night Oklahoma Christian offered Putnam a scholarship. Oklahoma Christian has been tracking Putnam for quite some time going all the way back to the summer. Putnam will receive many more looks from colleges before his recruitment is finished. One thing is becoming clearer each time he steps on the floor, Putnam has the skills to play at the Low Division I level.
The size of Putnam is a plus at 6’2, he plays both ends of the floor and he has the extra things coaches love in players. He works hard, doesn’t take plays off and is a great student of the game. Not to mention Putnam has great grades with a good ACT score.
Putnam has continued to impress each time out on the floor this season. He is currently averaging 24.1 points per game. Last night Tulsa Central Head Coach Eli Brown saw Putnam as an opposing coach. Coach Brown had great things to say about Putnam after the game.
“Burke is one of the toughest players I have coached against,” said Coach Brown. “He can score on all three levels. Burke has the capability to guard the 1,2 and 3. He can also play those positions offensively. He is a true competitor and a classy young man. I wish him nothing but success.”
Putnam has heard from several Division I programs recently. Expect his recruitment to pick up as the calendar continues towards April.
