Match-ups include a battle between two of the top point guards in the Cincinnati along with two of the top teams in the CMAC this week, so let’s take a look at some of the top games in the area for the second weekend of prep hoops:
#2 Woodward (2-1) at #1 Taft (2-0), Friday 7:30pm: Another big game within the CMAC with winner getting an early leg up in the race for league championship and seeding in the Division II tournament. Woodward’s Terry Durham has gotten off to fast start with 3 double-doubles in the first three games, including a 19 point 12 rebound performance against Little Miami on Tuesday 12/7 while PG Demontez Cooper is averaging 6.5 assist over the last two games for the Bulldogs. Malek Green leads the way for the Senators of Taft as they come off of a weekend that included a 30 point beat down of Mt. Healthy in which Green had 24pts/15reb. The Green-Durham matchup should a fun one to watch in a match-up that should produce a ton of highlights on both ends of the floor.
Prediction: Taft
#1 Moeller (1-0) at #7 Kings (0-0), Saturday 7:30pm: For fans of good point guard play this would be the game to see as two of the best point guards in the Cincinnati area will be on the court, Isaiah “Sleepy” Payton of Moeller and Tyler Mitchell of Kings. Payton, who is c/o ’18 with Division I interest, is a cool customer on the court who never changes expressions and always makes the correct play for the number one ranked team in Division I. Payton looks to be next in the long line of outstanding Crusader point guards. For Kings, the number seven ranked team in Division I, Tyler Mitchell is back to provide another year of highlight passes and outstanding shooting. I expect the Wright State commit to be in the running locally for POY and could possibly make a run for Mr. Basketball.
Prediction: Moeller
#4 Aiken (0-1) at #7 Shroder (2-0), Friday 7:30pm: Shroder, number seven in the Division III rankings, has started the season with two straight wins including one over conference foe Western Hills. The attacks for the Jaguars has pretty balanced to start the season with four players averaging in double figures to start the season, led by c/o ’18 G Derrick Heard and his 21.5ppg. Also watch for c/o ’18 G Steve Stewart, averaging 17.5ppg, who posted a double-double of 22pts and 10reb in the Jaguars first win of the season against Thurgood Marshall. For Aiken, number four in Division II, Marcus Barton will be looked upon to carry the offensive load. The c/o ’17 G scored 22 in the Falcons season opening loss to Columbus South Urban Academy. Barton will definitely need more offensive than he got against Columbus South where only one other Falcon scored in double digits with 10pts.
Prediction: Shroder
