Prep Hoops Colorado 5A Team Rankings: Week 3
There are some monster matchups on deck this week that will give us a real good idea of who is for real in the race for 5A supremacy. Until then, we had some big shakeup in the state’s highest classification, including a new No. 1.
Here we go:
1. George Washington (5-0; LW: 3)
The Patriots stomped past Overland last week while looking the part of a legit title contender. Bet buckle up when you play G-Dub. This team is relentless defensively.
2. Denver East (7-0; LW: 4)
The Angels are cruising even without the benefit of Daylen Kountz, the No. 1 player in the 2018. He had 2017 guard Jamison Washington will be back Jan. 5. If East can maintain its impressive chemistry when that time comes, look out.
3. Smoky Hill (4-1; LW: 2)
The Buffs went to Utah for the FreeTaxUSA Shootout last week and knocked off Lone Peak, which has dominated the top classification in that state for much of the last decade. Hill still has doubters. The Buffs get a chance to silence them Tuesday at George Washington.
4. Rock Canyon (7-1; LW: 8)
Beating No. 1 Eaglecrest was just a start. The Jags then went and won an out-of-state tournament in San Antonio behind the stellar play of 6-2 guard Sam Masten (No. 2 in 2018), who is averaging 23 points per game.
5. ThunderRidge (4-0; LW: 5)
An impressive victory over Doherty was part of a 3-0 week for the Grizzlies, who have received huge play out of 6-3 junior guard Kaison Hammonds.
6. Eaglecrest (3-1; LW: 1)
If last year told us anything, it won’t take long for the Raptors to climb their way back up the rankings. This team is too talented and experienced to let one loss to a solid Rock Canyon team to slow it down.
7. Cherokee Trail (4-0; LW: unranked)
A big victory over Lakewood for Jaizec Lottie and company has the Cougars still perfect and grabbing a spot in our rankings for the first time this season.
8. Grandview (4-0; LW: unranked)
Victories over Rangeview and Mountain Vista, in overtime, have Grandview’s stock rising. The Wolves play Rampart on Tuesday before heading to Las Vegas for the Tarkanian Classic.
9. Doherty (3-1; LW: 9)
The Spartans notched victories over 4A No. 1 Valor Christian and 5A Chaparral before falling by 11 to ThunderRidge on the road.
10. Chatfield (3-1; LW: 10)
The Chargers breezed to victories over Monarch and Boulder to stay in the top 10.
