Virginia Academy, Trinity Episcopal, St. Stephens & St. Agnes, & National Christian each scored victories in their respective contests. Below is a look at the 10 best from day one.
MVP | EJIKE OBINNA | VIRGINIA ACADEMY ’17
Ejike Obinna gets this award for his dominance down the stretch. The 6’10 big was unstoppable in the paint where he consistently and forcefully finished through contact. The Vanderbilt commit recorded a double-double with 28 points and 13 boards, while demonstrating excellent touch and patience on the low block.
BEST PLAY | BRENDAN ADAMS | CALVERT HALL ’18
Brendan Adams hit several tough shots for Calvert Hall, including a step-back three to take the game into overtime. Due to an injury to their starting point guard, Adams was thrust into the primary ball-handling role where he showed no problem breaking down defenders and consistently creating looks for himself and others. The dynamic junior guard hit 4 of 10 threes including a pull-up from the volleyball line late in overtime to keep the Cardinals in it.
BEST OFFENSIVE PERFORMANCE | GEORGE KALEMA | EPISCOPAL ’17
George Kalema nearly single-handedly propelled Episcopal into the second round with a 33 point eruption against Trinity. Kalema scored 29 of his points after halftime, while shooting 11 of 15 from the field (2 of 3 from downtown). Several college coaches in the stands were thoroughly impressed and consented that Brown is getting a steal in Kalema.
BEST DEFENSIVE PERFORMANCE | ARMANDO BACOT | TRINITY EPISCOPAL ’19
There were several excellent defensive performances of the day, but arguably none more impressive than that of Armando Bacot. The sturdy 6’9 big recorded 15 boards & 4 blocks along with 20 points to help lead the Titans to victory.
BEST GUY OFF THE BENCH | FAHMMI MAMO | NATIONAL CHRISTIAN ’18
In 19 minutes off the bench, Fahmmo Momo scored 12 points and snared six boards while hitting 2 of his 5 three points attempts. Momo was very crafty and consistently looked to attack.
BEST INTANGIBLES | DENMARK SLAY | ST. STEPHEN’S & ST. AGNES ’17
High Point commit Denmark Slay was rock solid for the Saints in their win vs. Good Counsel. The reliable lead guard dished out six dimes while committing zero turnovers. He scored 13 points on a very efficient four of nine shots from the field and connected on his only three point attempt.
BEST UNDER-THE-RADAR PERFORMANCE | DOMENICK BAILEY | ST. STEPHEN’S & ST. AGNES ’18
This was a coming out party of sorts for Domenick Bailey, who came over from Christ Chapel this season. The junior floor general had the hot hand early, scoring 11 of his team-high 17 points in the first half. Bailey was very active and stuffed the stat sheet, as evident by his 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocks.
BEST UNDERCLASSMEN | ARMANDO BACOT | TRINITY EPISCOPAL ’19
Armando Bacot showed why he is worthy of the number one spot in the Vantage Hoops 2019 Top 60. His physical fitness has considerably improved and his production has followed along. Virginia and Penn State were among the schools in the gym to see him.
BEST REBOUNDER | ZACH JACOBS | TRINITY EPISCOPAL ’17
JMU is getting a very good athlete and aggressive competitor in Zach Jacobs. The 6’7 forward corralled 15 first half boards on his way to a 21-point 21-rebound explosion for Trinity in their opening round win vs. the defending champs EHS.
BEST PASSER | JIMMY KPADEH | NATIONAL CHRISTIAN ’19
One thing that stands out when Jimmy Kpadeh passes the ball is how crisp and accurate his delivery is. The sophomore lead guard dished out a team-high six dimes for the Eagles, showcasing excellent vision and a deliberate approach.
