Drew Maschoff (Ankeny) — 31 points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists, 5 steals
After a decent individual performance in his team’s season-opening loss to Hoover, the Sioux Falls-commit erupted on Friday night in a 21 point win at Marshalltown.
Jake Hilmer (North Linn) — 18 points, 9 rebounds, 9 assists, 7 steals
If there’s anyone who’s more of a threat to piece together a quadruple-double this season, then we don’t know about them. This supremely talented athlete is already one of the state’s premier point guards, and he’s just a sophomore.
Brady Gavin (Martensdale St. Marys) — 29 points on 13-14 FGs, 14 rebounds, 4 blocks
The Blue Devils big-man especially stood out in his team’s opener because of his sterling efficiency. Gavin connected on all but one of his 14 field attempts in the one point loss to Woodward-Granger. His blocks and rebounds were also quite impressive.
Carter Stevens (Dubuque Senior) — 20 points, 13 assists, 5 rebounds
Not too long ago Stevens was considered one of the state’s best young guards, well now he’s a junior and has officially arrived as one of Iowa’s best all-around players. Known mostly as a scorer, those 13 assists are an indicator of his experience, and willingness to get his teammates involved.
Cade McKnight (Grinnell) — 31 points, 15 rebounds, 2 steals
He did not play this offseason because of a broken hand, but that had no impact on the start to his senior season. In the Tigers’ season-opener McKnight was extraordinary — a 30/15 game is a great accomplishment at any level of hoops.
Tyreke Locure (Des Moines North) — 32 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 5 steals
The extremely tough early season schedule has taken its toll on the Polar Bears, who have started 0-2 despite being one of Iowa’s most talented squads. Their uncanny sophomore point guard went off though in a narrow loss to Centennial on Friday night. Expect many more games like these from Locure this season.
Josh Dueker (Iowa Christian Academy) — 46 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 steals
We have Iowa Christian Academy on our list of teams to see this season, and Dueker is a big reason why. Those 46 points scored on Friday night are the most scored by any player yet this season, and it could be the season-high for some time.
Sam Ingoli (Dowling Catholic) — 12 points on 5-5 FGs, 6 rebounds, 4 assists
The Maroons don’t play a style that is conducive for gaudy numbers like the other guys on this list have, but the shooting efficiency of Ingoli in his team’s season-opener is key here. And he led the Maroons in rebounds and assists as well.
Austin Ash (Mount Vernon) — 32 points, 12 rebounds, 4 steals, 2 assists
In a 15 point season-opening win over Benton this future Iowa Hawkeye (walk-on) was sizzling, not just with his scoring, but the 6-foot-2 guard was dominant on the boards too.
Seth Weiland (West Hancock) — 17 points, 11 rebounds, 10 blocks
Last season it was Connor Sonius who was routinely posting trip-doubs for West Hancock, and Weiland is carrying the torch this season. It’s one thing to have a trip-doub with assists and rebounds, but with blocks, that’s a rare feat.
