Watchlist | Ville Platte | 19-1 |
Watchlist | Red River | 25-3 |
I am adding the 5 teams on the watchlist to the teams that I talk about. After the Top 25, these are teams I think are on the verge of making the list, but need either a signature win, or need to avenge a bad loss on the schedule. The watchlist teams are in no particular order.
Watchlist:
Landry-Walker (5-6)
You will be hard pressed to find a better team in the entire country with a losing record. The Charging Bucs have played a ridiculously tough schedule, and their record looks a little worse for wear as a result. They are currently on a three game skid, but all three losses come against favorites to win the state championship. All 6 losses have come against Top 25 teams.
Wossman (8-6)
This is another team that has played a remarkably tough schedule. However, they are currently on a five game win streak, and have two wins over Top 25 teams thus far, with more that could be on the way in early January at the Ouachita Parish tournament.
New Iberia (10-3)
One of the more surprising starts to the season, although it shouldn’t have been much of a surprise. Coach Todd Russ is a top 15 coach in the state, and he has players that play super hard for him. The Yellow Jackets have won seven of their last eight, and have some really quality wins thus far. New Iberia could end up competing for an incredibly tough district championship, versus Lafayette High and Comeaux.
Woodlawn Shreve (15-2)
The record for Woodlawn-Shreve has been really impressive thus far, but this week, the lost by 34 points to Peabody, which caused them to drop out of the Top 25.
Dunham (10-3)
The Dunham School might be a surprise for people that don’t follow high school basketball very closely, but for those who do, you have to be impressed with the young talent that coach Jonathan Pixley has amassed there. I still think the Tigers are a bit too young to truly compete, but expect to see Dunham in the top ten in the next two years, being led by top ranked 2019 Jordan Wright.
Top 25
25. Delhi Charter (8-0)
There are only three undefeated teams left in Louisiana High School basketball, heading into the Christmas break, and Delhi Charter is one of them. Much like an undefeated team in early November in college football, Delhi Charter has done enough to earn themselves a spot on the Top 25.
24. St. Thomas More (9-4)
The Cougars were a very late edition to the Top 25, as just last night, they got a win over a very tough John Curtis team, giving them their a second signature win. It should also be of note that only two losses thus far have been against in state teams.
23. Ellender (13-6)
The trend continues for the Patriots, as they continue to beat quality opponents, but drop games to less talented teams. This time, the Patriots lost to a good but not great Plaqumine team, and lost to a class C school, in Jehovah-Jireh.
22. Comeaux (10-5)
The Spartans have went 4-3 since our last update, a week ago. All three losses came against other teams in the Top 25 (Natchitoches Central, East Ascension, and Madison Prep), and the Spartans were competitive in all of them.
21. Bonnabel (9-2)
Bonnabel only played one game this past week, getting a win over a down Carver team this year. That still puts them at only two losses, both to quality teams. They are still lacking a quality win, but that can all change come January, and district play.
