No surprise here, this kid has been torching defenses — especially come state tournament time — for three years now. And his smooth jumper and slick handles are too much for 1A opponents to contain.
2 Joe Wieskamp (2018, Muscatine) 29.6
We’re not surprised that this future Iowa Hawkeye is leading 4A in scoring this season. But something around 23-24 points per game seemed more realistic than the near 30 he’s posting. The 6-foot-6 wing is absolutely wrecking-shop so far this season. Oh, and he’s only a junior.
3 Luke Zwack (2017, Waterloo Christian) 29.1
Not a lot was known about this senior until now. But he’s having a monster season, not only scoring the ball, but he’s averaging 10 boards per game too. He might want to trade in some of those monster numbers for wins — his Regents are 0-9 so far.
4 Brady Elder (2017, Pleasantville) 28.2
Here’s another guy we expected to be high on the scoring charts this season, but he’s probably a bit higher than we thought. The 5-foot-10 scoring guard spent last summer honing his skills and playing against the nation’s best with the Iowa Barnstormers 17U — that appears to be paying dividends now.
5 Michael Demers (2017, St. Mary’s, Storm Lake) 27.7
Demers averaged 24.8 points per game last season as a junior, which was good enough for ninth best in the state, so he’s a well-established elite scorer. He’s also shooting g the ball great, with percentages of 55 FGs, 43 3FGs and 78 FTs. Icing on the cake: his Panthers are undefeated, 6-0.
