Teams like last season’s North Carolina Tar Heels relied on senior leadership and experience to make it to the final four before falling to Villanova who also had strong senior leadership and experience on their roster.
Butler High School in Matthews is relying on that senior leadership to make their dreams turn into realities. The Bulldogs are off to a 10-0 start so far this season and senior and juniors are the reason behind it.
Zane Rankin6’4 senior guard Zane Rankin who has committed to Lander, is averaging 17 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists, senior point guard Tarique Stowe is averaging 10 points and 4.5 assists, senior guard Chase Morrisette-Barnett is averaging 7.2 points and 3.7 rebounds. As for the junior class, 6’6 small forward Garrale Gates is averaging 13.4 points and 10.4 rebounds, 6’2 junior guard DJ Little, who has a offer from Winthrop University is averaging 10.5 points and 3 rebounds per contest for head coach Myron Lowery.
Butler is ranked as the number one team in the PrepHoopsNC Top 10 4-A poll and have wins against solid teams in Mallard Creek HS, Hough HS, Kings Mountain HS, South Mecklenburg HS, North Rowan HS, Charlotte Catholic HS, Garinger HS, East Meck HS, Myers Park HS and Rocky River HS.
Senior and upperclass leadership can go along way when the season starts to come to an end and it’s a win or go home situation. After seeing it year in and year out I am taking a team with upperclassmen and experience overa team without either of the latter.
