To get a few things out of the way from the top, we are looking at a team’s overall resume when we are doing these rankings, not just one game. As you will see in the innagural rankings, head-to-head matchups matter, but are not the end all, be all of your rankings. Just because you beat a team that is ranked higher than you, doesn’t mean that you will be moving ahead of them. This is going to become a weekly ranking, and new rankings will be released Sunday night/Monday mornings. We will also be reguarly updating classification rankings weekly, every Wednesday, beginning this week. If you have any questions about the rankings, or want to reach out to me to tell me I’m an idiot for putting another team above your favorite, reach out on twitter @PrepHoopsLA or @chancelemaire. Here is a look at teams 7-15 of our Power Rankings
- Ellender (7-3)
Once again this season, you never know what Patriots team is going to walk through the door on game day. At it’s best, there is no doubt that Ellender has the talent and schemes to compete with any and every team in the state. However, there are also times when they can lose to teams with much less talent, and that is going to have to change in order for this team to reach it’s full potential.
- St. Augustine (7-1)
The Purple Knights have had quality wins so far this season, including winning the tournament that they host over a very good Ellender team. They are also undefeated when at full strength, with their only loss coming before football season was over. With another year with Coach Mitchell Johnson at the helm, that means another tough defense. The team has potential to move up even higher than they are now at 14.
- Washington Marion (7-2)
Battle tested! Washington Marion has played as tough a schedule this season as anyone in the state, with six games over teams either ranked in this Top 25 or on the watchlist. And for the most part, the Charging Indians have come out on top, with their only in state loss coming against top ranked Madison Prep. With a 1,2 punch in 2017 Christian Edwards and Davantre Vitor, this team is going to be tough to stop.
- St. Thomas More (5-1)
At 5-1 this Cougar team has done a great job of staying above water while waiting for three starters to return from football. Now that the football guys are back, look for a re-energized group of guys that plan on returning to the Top 28 for the 4th time in five years. The Cougars also took a trip to Houston this past weekend, where they competed with the best teams in the Houston area.
- East Ascension (7-1)
After a “surprise” trip to the Top 28 last season, in what was only a surprise because the talent for the Spartans was so young, this season’s East Ascension team is right on track for another appearance. With their only loss coming at the hands of a school ranked in our top 6, in U-High, East Ascension has cut through every other team on their schedule, pretty handedly.
- Chalmette (5-1)
My biggest question mark heading into the season for Chalmette was whether or not they would have enough talent to surround blue chip prospect Mitchell Robinson, and the answer thus far this season is yes. I knew that Robinson would put up ridiculous stats, like the 24 ppg and 11 rpg he is currently averaging. What I didn’t know was that they would also have three other seniors averaging double digit points, leading to a successful season thus far.
- De La Salle (7-0)
I was high on De La Salle heading into this season, picking them to win a Div. II state title, but I didn’t think the Cavaliers would be this good this quick. Off to a blazing 7-0 start, every single win for the 3A team has come against a bigger 5A school, and that tells me a lot of how De La Salle sees themselves. There are only two ways this could go, either they continue to rise up the rankings, or they started the season on a hot streak that the inexperience Cavaliers couldn’t live up to. Only time can tell. I’m airing on the side of rising.
- Peabody (5-1)
Six games in, and Peabody has already equalled their total amount of losses from last season. However, who that loss came against has to be more upsetting to the Warhorses. After a loss that can only be described as incredibly disappointing in the Top 28 against Wossman, Peabody had a chance at revenge early in the season, and let that opportunity slip through their hands, falling to them once again. However there are some bright spots for the Warhorses, notably Cedric Russell is playing out of his mind right now, averaging 29.5 ppg, which according to Maxpreps, leads the state. Also, if you take out Wossman, Peabody has only lost once in the last two years, which is a good sign.
- Ouachita Parish (6-1)
Ouachita Parish is off to a much better start than last season, in a year that ended in a trip to the Top 28. That can only bode well for an incredibly experienced and senior heavy Lions squad. With their only loss thus far to top ranked Madison Prep, the sky’s the limit for a team that has a great chance at returning to the Top 28 again this season.
