The Championship game of the Proviso West Holiday tournament paired two CPS powerhouses in Whitney Young and Morgan Park.
The highly anticipated championship game was an exciting fast paced matchup and Whitney Young would hold on to the victory over Morgan Park 80-71 to take the crown.
The Whitney Young Dolphins got out to a hot start and never looked back, within the first 3 minutes they were already up 13-5. Lucas Williamson would be the catalyst for the Dolphins. Morgan Park made a late push to stay in it but Williamson and Whitney Young were just too much down the stretch and played a really sound game on both ends of the court.
Here are the 10 best for the game.
MVP: Lucas Williamson (Whitney Young)
The unsigned senior continues to have a stellar season, and expect more colleges to start to take notice. From the start of this one Williamson was locked in. He scored from all three levels played with poise and also played good defense battling with the bigs of Morgan Park. He finished 10-14 from the field 2-5 from 3 and 5-5 from the line for 27 points he also had 9 rebounds and 3 assist.

Best Offensive performances: Lucas Williamson, Xavier Castaneda and Craig Beaudion (Whitney Young)
Williamson played great but also got help from JR PG Xavier Castaneda and SR G Craig Beaudion. The trio scored 72% of Whitney Young’s points going a combined 23-35 from the field which is 65%. Casteneda finished with 15 pts 5 ast 4 reb. And 3 steals. Beaudion had 16 points 6 rebs 3 ast 3 steals. The strong play of the three offensively was a major reason why Whitney Young was able to pull off the win.
Best Defensive Performance: Craig Beaudion (Whitney Young)
Faced with the task of guarding Morgan Park star Ayo Dosunmu, Beaudion used his length (6’4) and quick feet to stay in front of Dosunmu limited him to just 2 points the first half and just 8 points for the game. He also has help from guard Castaneda and Javon Freeman to play solid team defense on the perimeter.
Best under the radar performance: Nimari Burrnet (Morgan Park)
Just a freshman Burrnet provided some spark and big buckets at key times. He finished with 6 points in 11 minutes off the bench.
Best 6th Man: Cam Burrell (Morgan Park)
The 6’6 junior came off the bench and went 6-10 for 12 points and 6 rebounds in 18 minutes for MP. He also had some big blocks and two steals on defense.
Best non senior: Xavier Castaneda (Whitney Young)
One of the State’s top PG’s The Junior Castaneda controlled the pace of the game, made timely decisions and was very efficient. He showed leadership from the point guard position which is pivotal in big games.
Play of the game: Javon Freeman (Whitney Young)
The 6’3 Junior got the crowd buzzing in the 1st half with a huge breakaway dunk!
Best Passer: Ayo Dosunmu (Morgan Park)
Although he didn’t have his best performance scoring the PG did dish out 8 assist in the game. He set up his teammates which kept them in the game.
Biggest Takeaway: Whitney Young’s guard play
Starting four guards WY played solid team ball. Their team defense was great and the efficiency on the offensive end from their top three scorers was impressive. If they can keep up that type of play they will be hard to beat.
