The first week of the season is officially complete and you already have some top teams struggling out of the gate. The first is 1A State Champ Liberty Christian. The Lions are already 0-2 on the season and although their top returning player, Ronny Williams is off to a great start, they don’t seem to have that same impact they did a year ago. Losing to Blackhawk wasn’t a surprise as they could be a potential contender for State, but a loss to Alexandria on Saturday has to be a little concerning.
The other team to look at is Mt. Vernon-Fortville. They are also 0-2 to start the year with losses to Whiteland in 2OT and now Hamilton Heights. This team is as setup as any in the state with seniors that can produce but in two games they have yet to play like the team they should. They do get some easier games here the next week but then you have Pendleton Heights and Castle the week after, both really good teams. They have to make some adjustments quickly.
Few Surprise In First Week
When looking at who out-performed their expectations in the first week of the season, a couple teams to look at are Clinton Prairie and Valparaiso. Now, you can say Valparaiso hasn’t really played anyone tough and that is true, however, you have to look at how they won their first two games of the season. Valpo only allowed 47 points combined in their first two wins over Boone Grove and Hobart. Last year they played the same two teams to start the season, they allowed 99 points. Obviously things change but in terms of things that stuck out in the first week, to have two defensively dominant games in the first week is huge.
For Clinton Prairie, it was more about that all the known names are gone. Now, in a week where you play Frankfort and Clinton Central, two really good teams in your backyard, you pull off two wins, that is saying something. If the standard of the teams Clinton Prairie could beat are Frankfort and Clinton Central, the Tri-County game on December 9th could be one to really pay attention to.
