Teams: Fort Wayne Carroll, DeKalb, East Noble, Fort Wayne North, Fort Wayne Northrop, Fort Wayne Snider
Last Season: This past year was really competitive at the top. Snider, Carroll, and North were all among the best teams in the state and they were able to show that in the Sectional. North took down Snider in a first round matchup that was among the best games that day. Then, Carroll was able to knock off Fort Wayne North in a low 55-44 victory. Ultimately, Homestead was able to pull the upset over Carroll in the Regional Semifinal.
Contenders For 2016-17: This season, look for another highly competitive year in Sectional 5. All of the big three from last year should be just as good if not better. Fort Wayne North is about as loaded as you could want with guys like Keion Brooks, Jaylen Butz, Davontae Kinnie, Juan Quarles, and more. Carroll loses Kyle Mallers, Avery Fath, and Kelham Brown but their depth of talent is no more evident than it will be this year. Look for guys like Anthony Martin and Jordan Bridges to fill in the roles by Fath and Brown and then Jacob Redding, Arius Jones, and Jared Hofer to fill in the scoring. Snider will be the most interesting of the trio as Li’Donta Hicks-Gentry and Devin Tennant are now gone but they have the third best player in the state still in Malik Williams. East Noble, DeKalb, and Fort Wayne Northrop should struggle once again to keep up with the elite teams in the Sectional.
Players to Watch: You could pick quite a few players of note in this Sectional but the one that could have the most influence on who wins this Sectional could be Keion Brooks. The 6’7 sophomore is among the most talent in his class nationally and this is going to be his Fort Wayne North team this year. They need a guy that is going to be a premier scoring threat if they want to be the best they can be and Brooks has that ability. Is he too young to be that guy? Maybe but if he can step up this team could be very, very good.
