Teams: Cathedral, Arsenal Tech, Lawrence Central, Lawrence North, North Central, Warren Central
Last Season: This Sectional was the best one in the entire state last year as it should have been. With teams like Arsenal Tech, Lawrence Central, North Central, and Lawrence North, you really can’t go wrong. The winner last year was North Central that was able to just edge out Lawrence Central in Kyle Guy’s last season. All teams were well over .500 except for Warren Central who was going through a bit of a transition and probably exceeded expectations in Criss Beyers first year as head coach. North Central eventually lost to Terre Haute South in the first round of Regionals a week later.
Contenders For 2016-17: This season will be very interesting as this group of teams isn’t as loaded as it was a year ago. North Central returns all the key players with Mateo Rivera, Emmanuel Little, and Kris Wilkes and they are likely the best team in the state heading into the season. However, Lawrence North has their talented 2018 class now as upperclassmen and they should be just as competitive. Cathedral is going through a transition with new head coach like Warren Central did the year before. Tech is depleated after losing Chris King, Wesley Jones, and C.J. Walker. Tech should struggle this season. Warren Central is likely to be much improved but not sure how they will do. Mack Smith looks like a breakout candidate but the talent is still thin for this ridiculously loaded Sectional. Lawrence Central should also struggle this season a bit but has enough pieces that by the end of the year they could be competitive. They just lost a lot of guys who had the majority of the minutes and will take some time to work in the new group of players. Overall, look for North Central and Lawrence North to be the best of the bunch with Cathedral and Lawrence Central a step down and Tech and Warren Central on the outside looking in.
Players to Watch: The two players to focus on this season are Emmanuel Little of North Central and Kevin Easley of Lawrence North. North Central is about as setup as they have been in recent years to win a State Championship, however, they will need their interior threat in Little to breakout to ensure a deep run. When Emmanuel has the motor going, this team will be unstoppable. For Lawrence North, in order for them to compete, they need to have the best version of Kevin Easley. Their depth isn’t as impressive as it was last season so you need the most out of your starters. Easley should be the best player on this team if they want to get where they want to be, at Bankers Life in March.
