Since 2006, seven of the eleven winners have been drafted by NBA teams. Last year’s winner, Lawrence Central’s Kyle Guy, is in his first season at Virginia. He, along with Zak Irvin at Michigan and Caleb Swanigan at Purdue, are current award winners still in the college ranks.
Bio: Jack Nunge of Castle
Jack Nunge is one of the best players in the state and definitely one of the best in the southern part of the state. The 6’9 forward is committed to Iowa and ranked as the 201st prospect in the nation according to 247sports.com where he is also listed as a three star prospect. Nunge is a rare big man that can shoot the ball very well and also can post up and go to work in the paint. His defense is pretty good as well and is a more underrated part of his game. It’s the offensive end of his game though where he will earn his keep this year and the next four at a major program as Iowa is.
Why He Can Win
Nunge is in this conversation because he is one of the best players in the state this year. He will be able to score on anyone in the state and has the potential to fill up a stat line. Castle also is a very solid team this year which always helps the candidates. Just because he is not in central Indiana does not mean he can’t win, he will just have to have an exceptional year, which he is capable.
Things To Watch For
Castle is a definite top ten team in the state this year with everyone returning from a very good team last year. For Nunge to get put in the mix though he will have to lead his team to state and roll over the opponents they face on the way to Banker’s Life, an early exit in the tournament or anything less than semi-state, Nunge will be on the outside looking in on Mr. Basketball.
